Young Man:

Young Man Gestation takes 16 days; 7-15 in litter; young man born pink, naked, and blind. Do not disturb young man or mother for at least a week after birth; if disturbed mother will either kill and eat the young man or neŽglect them and allow them to die. After 3 weeks, remove young man from mother; otherwise, mother fights with them and often kills them. Sexes should be separated before young man reach maturity at 43 days.

Voice: Both young man and old alligators hiss; female grunts like a pig in calling young man; young man make moaning sound, with mouth closed.

See Also That The Young Are Nourished:

8. It should be kept in mind that most animals will bite or try to bite when frightened. It is a wise precaution to wear heavy gloves when picking up animals that are of uncertain temper or unused to being handled. There is no point at all in handling venomous animals, such as black-widow spiders, centipedes, or scorpions. The snakes mentioned in this volume are nonpoisonous, but they can inflict an unpleasant bite. Many species become quite docile after getting accustomed to a home terrarium. Still, anybody who hanŽdles a wild animal does so at his own risk. THE members of the class of mammals differ from all other classes in the animal kingdom in that the young are nourished on milk proŽduced by the mother's mammary glands. The young are usually born fully formed; and the majority of them are covered with hair or fur; all are warm-blooded.

An offset is a plantlet that has developed laterally on a stem either above or below ground. They can be detached from their parent plant and grown on to make firm new plants.A runner is a more or less horizontal stem that arises from a crown bud and creeps overground. The leaves are normally scale-like, and rooting may occur at the nodes. The lateral buds develop as new plants, and eventually the stem of the runner deteriorates, leaving a new isolated plant. This is a method of propagation in which a stem is encouraged to produce roots so that a new plant is formed while still attached to and nourished by the parent plant. Some shrubs layer themselves naturally: simply lift them from the soil, cut them from the parent plant and replant. The simplest way of propagating by layering is to select vigorous young shoots and to peg them down around the parent plant. First dig the soil around the main plant and prepare the shoot by cutting a notch halfway through at a leaf joint about 12in from its tip. After first treating the cut surfaces with a rooting powder, peg the shoot down.
