White House In 1881:

White House In 1881 Last Years. After keeping his pledge to serve only one term, Hayes left the White House in 1881. He thereafter eschewed further participa¬tion in politics. For the dozen remaining years of his life he devoted himself to promoting such causes as public education (especially in the South), prison reform, aid to Negroes, manual training, and the welfare of various universities, notably Ohio State. Interestingly, he began more definitely to express social ideas that classed him as a rather advanced liberal for his day.

Elected speaker of the House of Representatives in 1876, he did much to codify its rules before the Republicans returned to power in 1881. With the House once more in Demo¬cratic hands in 1883, he resumed his chairmanship of the Committee on Appropriations. His con¬sistent advocacy of a protective tariff eventually cost him the support of President Grover Cleve¬land, however, and in 1888 he lost control of the Pennsylvania Democratic organization. There¬after his influence in Congress was slight.

See Also Pest House At Jaffa:

Gros' best-known paintings are Victor of Ar-cole, The Battle of Ei/lau, and Napoleon Visiting the Pest House at Jaffa. In this last painting, his exploitation of the esoteric Middle Eastern set¬ting anticipates the later romantic interest in that area. Even more significant is the pessimism ex¬pressed in the portrayal of the dead and dying soldiers; the realistic rendering of these pathetic, plague-ridden figures contradicts the idealized neoclassicism of David and anticipates the ro¬mantic realism of Gericault.

Economic position: One of man's great problems, as a house mouse damages property, food, and clothing It is thought that the common, unwelcome house mouse probably originated somewhere in Asia, but it has spread throughout Europe, America, and practically the entire world. The house mouse is al¬ways found accompanying man in every environment. Although the house mouse is a pest, it does make an interesting and gentle pet.
