Well-defined Small Fruit: Small; eyes red; body plump, yellowish; wings clear. LARVAE: Maggotlike; live in fruit pulp where they pupate. Larvae and eggs so small they are seldom noticed.
Use small fruit jar; moisten bottom. Put in any soft, juicy, partially crushed fruit; overripe banana excellent. Leave jar in exposed spot;do not allow fruit or bottom of jar to become dry. After fruit flies have swarmed over bait for several days, place jar in cage with aniŽmals to be fed. Adults soon emerge and supply pets with food.
There are no extensive or well-defined small fruit areas, exclusive of grapes. Mostly they are found centered about heavily populated reŽgions on the Atlantic seaboard; from New York south to Virginia; in southwestern Michigan, and along the Pacific coast from Washington to California. Scattered plantings of small fruits, particularly strawberries, are to be found throughŽout most of the South Central states from which early shipments are sent to the northern markets.See Also Use Small Specimens:a General Test Use small specimens are to be taken longitudinally and of the full thickness or section of material as rolled, except as otherwise specified.
b Test Use small specimens Test Use small specimens are to receive no other preparaŽtion than that prescribed and are to similarly and simultaneously receive all the treatment given the material from which they are cut, except as otherwise specified. Straightening of Use small specimens distorted by shearing is to be carried out while the piece is cold.
c Use small specimens from Plates Over 38.1 mm (1.5 in.) Thickness For plates over 38.1 mm (1.5 in.) in thickness, tension test Use small specimens may be machined to the form and dimensions shown in Figure 44.2, and the axis of each such specimen is to be located midway between quircments, two additional Use small specimens may, at the request of the manufacturer, be taken from the same plate and tested in the manner specified, but in such case, both of the Use small specimens are to conform to the requirements (see 44.1.x:). If a bend test specimen fails clue to conditions of bending more severe than required by the specificaŽtion, a retest is to be permitted, either on a duplicate specimen or on a remaining portion of the failed specimen.
On The Other Hand See Vapornto Small Ice:Minute particles of silver Ddide and other chemicals also convert the vapornto small ice crystals which then act as nuclei.i.s a result of observations in tropical and semi-ropical regions where heavy rains are known to ill from clouds with temperatures entirely above reezing, it has been theorized that spraying water ito the clouds may initiate precipitation.By dropping large numbers of small pellets of irbon dioxide snow into supercooled clouds, chaefer and Irving Langmuir, both of General lectric Laboratories in Schenectady, in 1946 and )47 demonstrated that a cloud may be converted ito an ice crystal or snow cloud. These expedŽients and others conducted by various govern-.ental and private agencies in 1947-1950 were some cases followed by small amounts of rain, at always under conditions favorable for rain om natural causes.
Among the best small-aquarium inhabitants are small marine snails and barnacles. Starfish, sea urchins, sea cucumbers, and sea anemones will usually live for a few weeks and under carefully controlled conditions may be kept in aquaria for much longer periods. Small crabs will often thrive where more exacting forms die, and Obelia will often live and reproduce new colonies in very small aquaria. . . .
