Tree Is Home And Food:

Tree Is Home And Food If the climate - the weather and its vag¬aries - provides the principal influence on a tree, a more immediate effect upon its exis¬tence may be posed by some microscopic vector of death - an insect or bacterium forming part of a population to which a tree is home and food. Most of these tiny creatures do no harm at all; others, such as the elm bark beetle, distribute a fungus that kills off centuries-old trees over wide areas.

The principles involved in constructing the tree seat are easy to modify to a home¬made unit. Straight-edged wood can be used to construct a planter or tree seat if a more formal appearance is required. If there is no suitable tree in the garden, it may be worth planting one and building the seat around it, leaving room for the trunk to grow as the years go by. Alternatively, you could use the seat as a planter by filling it with soil and adding small shrubs, or trailing plants. A simple outdoor bench can be constructed by erecting two piers. The bench top can simply rest loosely on the piers, or can be attached with screws driven into wallplugs.

See Also Brought Home Modestly:

Not so, however, acts the poor man, with his little box of very little negatives brought home modestly in his waistcoat pocket. Therewith he sits him down at a table, having a compound achromatic microscope before him . . . and then . . . wanders at will, truly the monarch of all he surveys, over the various parts of each picture; re¬calls the circumstances under which it was taken; dis¬covers characteristic detail which he never dreamed of before; and then—each picture you will remember hav¬ing been taken square—he decides whether a positive copy should be shaped as a long, i.e.

Grant longed for active duty, however, and on May 24, 1861, tendered his services to the U. S. government, suggesting modestly that he was "competent to command a regiment." Failing to secure such an appointment, he ac¬cepted from Governor Yates the command of the 21st Illinois Regiment, quickly brought it under excellent discipline, and did good service against guerrillas in Missouri.

On The Other Hand See Curricula Of Home:

This chapter will explore some of the limits set on pupils in the early years of primary education by traditional English attitudes towards modem foreign languages, as well as the wider issue of learning opportunities afforded young children by their families, schools, communities and the society in which they are participants: what do our children learn from the informal curricula of home, school and other services?

The Bullock Report (1975) was the first to acknowledge that to lose one's first language is to lose one's culture and identity: 'No child should be expected to cast off the language and culture of the home as she crosses the school threshold, and the curriculum should reflect that part of his life' (Bullock 1975, p. 286). The Committee recom¬mended changes in objectives, curricula and methodology in lan¬guage education.
