Train Health Education:

Train Health Education About 70 colleges and universities offer programs to train health education teachers, and the profession is growing. Members of the pro¬fession feel strongly that health education should not be considered a part of physical education and that physical education should not be a branch of health education. Some high schools now give a half year to physical education and a half year to health instruction.

World War II brought a renewed focus on the role of the school in promoting good health. The traditional equating of health with physical fitness, and health education with physical edu¬cation, was further perpetuated during this pe¬riod. During the 1960's this concept was replaced by the identification of health education as a discipline separate from physical education. The School Health Education Study, initiated with private funds in 1961, had the most significant impact in establishing health education as a separate discipline.

See Also Public Health During:

In 1968 the public health during Health Service was reor¬ganized into three separate health agencies: the Health Services and Mental Health Administra¬tion, the National Institutes of Health, and the Consumer Protection and Environmental Health -Service, including the Food and Drug Adminis¬tration, one of the agencies originally transferred into the Federal Security Agency in 1939. These three health agencies are directed by the assistant secretary for health and scientific affairs, who is aided by the surgeon general of the public health during Health Service.

The Partnership for Health program was the product of this growing dissatisfaction. The main features of the law were: comprehensive state-wide health planning, participation on a majority basis of nonprofessional citizens in the planning process, and federal financial support for public health during health programs defined by the state planning agencies. These few ground rules represented a tremendous potential for making public health during health services responsive to the needs of people in local communities. Another major public health during health development in the U.S. was the passage of the Regional Medi¬cal Centers Act.

On The Other Hand See Efforts In Health Instruction:

The Place of Health Education in the Curriculum. In U. S. public schools, health instruction has been achieved through a variety of organizational patterns. One method is to include facts on health in such content areas as biology, social studies, or home economics. Units of health re¬lated to these areas have been included in the regular classroom instruction. However, the most successful method of accomplishing the aims and objectives of health education is that of direct in¬struction. In this method health instruction is considered a distinct part of the total school curriculum.

The second and third decades of the 20th century saw renewed efforts in health instruction and professional preparation of teachers by such groups as the American Child Health Association (no longer in existence). Also influential is the Joint Committee on Health Problems in Educa¬tion of the National Education Association and the American Medical Association. The joint committee in 1924 published a book entitled Health Education, A Program for Public Schools and Teacher Training Institutions. This book, which has been revised periodically, probably has had the greatest impact on the health edu¬cation curriculum and preparation of teachers of any publication in the 20th century.
