Top-class Milk And Grazes: The farmer's herd of 30 Jersey cows gives top-class milk and grazes rich past泉res containing clovers that "fix" atmos殆heric nitrogen. Following the cattle, 20 ewes and their lambs graze the pastures and replenish them with their droppings. The livestock includes 200 free-range hens and some pigs.
On the farm there are nine hectares (20 acres) of milling wheat, grown after beans. The beans, being legumes, enrich the soil with nitrogen. They yield 3,200 to 3,800kg per hectare (25 to 30cwt an acre) and are fed to the cattle. The wheat yields 4,800 to 5,000kg per hectare (38 to 40cwt an acre).
The dairy industry in the U.S. was alarmed over the threat that the "filled" and "imitation" milks posed to the fluid, fresh milk market. These new products made significant inroads in the milk market in 1967 and in some states, such as Arizona, took over as much as 5% of the fluid milk sales. Filled milk was made from skim milk or skim milk solids reconstituted with vegetable fat rather than milk fat. The imitation milks on the U.S. market had sodium caseinate as a base, together with vegetable fat and a particular flavoring agent. The ingredient costs permitted these products to be retailed at eight to ten cents per gallon cheaper than fresh milk.See Also Milk Production:Fine and medium wools are used largely for apparel fabrics and blankets, while longer, coarser wools are used mainly for Rugs and carpets.
In some European and Middle Eastern coun氟ries sheep are used for milk production as well as for meat and wool. Ewe milk has a higher fat content than cow's milk, averaging about 6 per cent. Such milking breeds as the East Fresian may yield up to 130 gallons annually. Sheep are also valued in some areas for their manure. Sheepskins are used for a variety of lightweight leathers, and pelts may be tanned with the wool on for coats, robes, rugs, and slippers. Fur pelts are obtained from young Karakul lambs.
Cheese is made from ripened milk curds and if made from full cream milk will contain most of the food properties of the milk. Although there are really only three categories of cheese (soft, hard pressed and blue), variations in the process of making it produce over 2,000 different kinds. The main variables are the type of milk used and the conditions under which the source animal was fed. In addition, the methods of maturing the cheese greatly affect it [5],
On The Other Hand See Nourished On Milk Pro查uced:8. It should be kept in mind that most animals will bite or try to bite when frightened. It is a wise precaution to wear heavy gloves when picking up animals that are of uncertain temper or unused to being handled. There is no point at all in handling venomous animals, such as black-widow spiders, centipedes, or scorpions. The snakes mentioned in this volume are nonpoisonous, but they can inflict an unpleasant bite. Many species become quite docile after getting accustomed to a home terrarium. Still, anybody who han查les a wild animal does so at his own risk.
THE members of the class of mammals differ from all other classes in the animal kingdom in that the young are nourished on milk pro查uced by the mother's mammary glands. The young are usually born fully formed; and the majority of them are covered with hair or fur; all are warm-blooded.
Apples, pears, and peaches are increasingly pro查uced for export. Epirus, on the western side of the Pindus range, has fewer plains and more pas氟ure. It produces cattle, sheep, maize, milk pro查ucts, and, at Arta, olives, citrus fruits, and rice. Sheep graze in the mountains in the summer and in the lowlands in the winter. |
