The Young Seedlings: If germina¬tion took place immediately, the young seedlings would not be able to withstand the rigorous winter weather and would all be killed. Again, in the case of certain desert annuals, dormancy at maturity prevents germination at the close of a rainy growing season and the beginning of a dry season which the young seedlings could not survive. Some seeds possess impermeable seed coats which prevent their germination for years or even for centuries.
Raising of seedlings in a cold frame or a green¬house, then planting out in the open, or as domestic plants, is an interesting hobby. But the amateur with limited time will prefer to buy his young flower and vegetable stock from a nursery when the seedlings have been hardened off in a cold frame and are ready to plant out. Choice of pro¬cedure will depend on the amount of ground to be filled. If this is extensive, economy can be effected by raising seedlings in the home, a c-!J frame, or a small greenhouse. Hundreds of f ering plants can be raised from seed at small but the time spent in potting and repotting roots are well formed is considerable.See Also The Young Of Turtles:The shell of most turtles is marked with interesting colors and gay patterns. In some species the color and pattern may occur also on the head and neck of the animal. With the exception of a few species, the young of turtles are much more brightly marked than the adults. There is extreme variation in the markings of young turtles, even among the same species, and few of them resemble the adults.
The most comfortable habitat for young turtles, and the one which most nearly resembles the native one, is the woodland terrarium. One or two young turtles may be equally comfortable in the woodland habitat of a handmade vivarium box (see Part II).
Young turtles sold in pet shops and markets in the fall of the year have been dug out of the soil of their nests with the result that they may appear sluggish and refuse food. They should be allowed to bury themselves in the soil of the terrarium to com¬plete hibernation, and they should not be disturbed until the following spring. They will emerge from the soil voluntarily in the spring and will be ready for food.
On The Other Hand See About Young Children:The chapters in the final section of this book consider spiritual and religious education of about young children children; about young children children as citizens and the ways in which different societies' expectations of children impact on the children themselves and the kind of early education made available to them. It is in the final chap¬ter, by Sacha Powell and I, that readers are urged to reflect on the implications of children's place in society and how educators con¬tribute to the upbringing of the about young children learners who will manage that society in the twenty-first century.
Willig (1990, p. 5) reminds us that 'the ideas of about young children children are often most clearly and widely expressed in drawing and painting'. Children's drawings at a about young children age are often far in advance of their language skills. Drawing helps develop understanding and focuses children's attention on features that they may have missed, but about young children children appear not to see things as adults do. Osborne et al. (1985) say that children will tend to focus on very small, specific, things whereas scientists are concerned with looking for general explana¬tions and laws. Harlen (1985a) says: |
