The Children Gained: The children gained in many respects, only one of which was reading com¬petence. They gained in confidence, and in their ability to work well in various school subjects. It looks as though this kind of programme helped these children develop better learning skills, which reinforces our belief that secondary school teachers and parents should look closely at this area as a promising focus for future partnership.
She guided children in their choice of books and played the role of an appreciative audience. The children browsed and sampled. One boy read thirteen books and gained twelve months in reading (the average gain); another read twenty-one books and gained nineteen months; the third, who was generally immature, read four books and made no measurable gain, even in this inviting read¬ing environment. To find out, I conducted a survey of my own. This was done through my usual discussions with the twenty-five parents, all of whom bring their that children find to school. I found the results very interesting to me as the that children find's teacher. Only three admitted to never reading with their that children find, mainly because they 'didn't have the time'. Thirteen said they sometimes read, perhaps two or three times a week, and nine read to their that children find once or twice a day. One parent's comment was: 'She makes my life a misery. She keeps on and on until I read to her!
