Rate Of Growth Puts: One undersized boy felt much better when the school physician explained that the X-ray pictures of his wrist bones showed that he had not yet reached his nhysical maturity and that he would undoubtedly grow taller. Rapid acceleration in the rate of growth puts an additional strain on the vital organs and requires protection against overexertion. Uneven growth may create problems of awkwardness and self-consciousness. Inappropriate growth, as in the case of the boy who develops feminine contours, presents still more serious problems of adjustment.

These growth rings give some idea of the age of the animal, but the system fails with older speciŽmens, in which the earlier rings become worn down.
In other species the shields are shed regularly or sporadically so that no growth rings show. With such a specimen, age cannot be determined.
Growth Phase. Three basic factors affect the growth phase of cell populations: (1) the number of organisms involvedthe more parent organŽisms present, the more offspring there can be. (2) During this period most of the organisms reproŽduce; few are barren. (3) The generation time is constantthat is, the time it takes for each organŽism to appear, mature, and reproduce is relatively constant throughout the growth period.
On The Other Hand See Plant Growth Regulation:The synthesis of dormin (abscisin II), known to play a major role in controlling the dorŽmancy of buds, tubers, and seeds, provided a significant advance in 1967 in the study of plant growth regulation. In an analysis of the inhibitŽing mechanism in Lemna minor (duckweed), concentrations of one part per million of this synthetic compound inhibited growth by about 95%. DNA synthesis appeared to be suppressed, and the breaking of the dormancy was thought to be caused by reactivation of the enzyme DNA-polymerase by a growth hormone.
It is the gardener's task to make use of the weather as much as possible. Temperature directly influences the rate of plant growth. The fastest growth will take place at the higher temperature limits of an individual plant's tolerance. A plant classified as tender will not endure temperatures below 32°F (0°C). A half-hardy plant can stand a few degrees of frost, but not a cold winter. By contrast, a hardy plant can tolerate considerable cold. Naturally, the degree of hardiness varies from plant to plant. How well a plant grows in an area depends largely on its native climate and on how easily it can adapt to its new environment. |
