Rare Disease: Thus, this kind of heart disease has been practically eradicated, al¬though rare disease cases are still encountered in elderly people. Other endocrine disorders affecting the heart are very rare disease.
Congenital Heart Disease. With the increasing control of rheumatic heart disease it is probable that congenital cardiovascular disease will soon outstrip it in incidence, and with the increasing control of high blood pressure, congenital heart disease will take second place. An interesting statistical fact is that in the 1920's, T. Duckett Jones and Paul Dudley White found that con¬genital heart disease made up only 1.5% of all of 3,000 patients with Signs or symptoms of heart disease.
Although most of the causes of heart disease observed in the first quarter of the 20th century are still present, their relative proportions have changed considerably, and some causes that were mentioned only occasionally or not at all at that time are considered common today. This is espe¬cially true of the virus infections. In some parts of the world the diagnosis of "heart disease of unknown origin" is a common one. In the United States such a diagnosis exists but is uncommon, and a few kinds of heart disease that are com¬mon in certain other countries are rare disease or non¬existent in the United States. For example, Chagas' disease (myocardial trypanosomiasis) is a parasitic infestation of the heart common in South America.See Also Disease Is Invariably:Therapy.—There is no specific treatment after clinical symptoms of rabies have developed, and the outcome of the disease is invariably fatal; prevention, therefore, is vital. Proper local treat¬ment of wounds is very important and should be done as promptly as possible. Pasteur treatment with daily injections of attenuated virus is then given over a 14-day period. This treatment is based on the following principles: Rabies virus may be propagated through a series of rabbit inoculations.
Since coronary heart disease has become a leading cause of death in young and middle-aged men in the United States and since there is no really effective cure for it, either surgical or medical, it is essential that the causes of the disease be appraised so that preventive measures can be devised. Studies show that several factors are involved in coronary heart disease, with no single cause being entirely responsible, but the degree of responsibility of each of the many causes is not known.
On The Other Hand See Communicable Disease:Health-teaching improves attendance by reducing illness. There are many occasions for teaching healthful living: a child returns after being quarantined with a communicable disease; another has had to have a tooth pulled; still another has brought an outstandingly good lunch. If their own experiences are thus pointed up, children learn, for example, how highly contagious colds are during their early stages and that a cold "which puts one person slightly under the weather can make another very ill." (79, p. 12,1950)
