Rapidity Of Growth Depends:

Rapidity Of Growth Depends Rapidity of growth depends upon the amount of food a snake obtains each season. During the process of growth the skin is shed many times. When it is time for a snake to shed, the old skin becomes dull in color and the eyes take on a milky appearance which is caused by the old glassy eyecap being pushed away from the new cap and the space between the two being filled by an oily fluid which creates opaqueness. This affects the vision of the snake with the result that it becomes more wary and more prone to strike dur¬ing this period. The old skin is loosened by an oily substance which makes shedding possible.

Lateral growth in trees frequently begins later than growth in height, but the period of lateral growth is longer. Rates of lateral growth like¬wise are low at the outset, increasing after a few weeks and then diminishing. In view of the long annual period of lateral growth in trees, deleterious environmental conditions may exercise a pronounced effect on growth. In the wood of trees of temperate regions, narrow and wide growth rings may be observed, marking years characterized by unfavorable and favorable con¬ditions for growth.

See Also Rapid Growth:

One undersized boy felt much better when the school physician explained that the X-ray pictures of his wrist bones showed that he had not yet reached his nhysical maturity and that he would undoubtedly grow taller. rapid growth acceleration in the rate of growth puts an additional strain on the vital organs and requires protection against overexertion. Uneven growth may create problems of awkwardness and self-consciousness. Inappropriate growth, as in the case of the boy who develops feminine contours, presents still more serious problems of adjustment.

On The Other Hand See The Growth Of Populations:

The problem of human growth—the popula¬tion explosion—must be understood in the same context as the growth of populations of other organisms. At present the human population is in a growth phase with a mean doubling time of about 25 years. Although the number of humans an double every 25 years, the food supply cannot Jo so indefinitely.

The properties of the growth phase described for microorganisms also applies to the growth of populations of higher organisms. In a situation where food and space were virtually unlimited, a population of animals or plants would double (or triple or quadruple) at a constant rate just as bacteria do, and the resulting increase would be just as devastating, although it would take a few years instead of a few days.
