Public Health Nursing:

Public Health Nursing The famed rural public health nursing health nursing program, a unique demonstration of the value of community health and sanitation departments in preventing disease and improving health conditions generally, began in 1912. The year 1914 marked the begin¬ning of Red Cross lifesaving and water safety instruction. World War I brought the organiza¬tion a rounded program, national stature, and pop¬ular recognition.

In 1968 the public health nursing Health Service was reor¬ganized into three separate health agencies: the Health Services and Mental Health Administra¬tion, the National Institutes of Health, and the Consumer Protection and Environmental Health -Service, including the Food and Drug Adminis¬tration, one of the agencies originally transferred into the Federal Security Agency in 1939. These three health agencies are directed by the assistant secretary for health and scientific affairs, who is aided by the surgeon general of the public health nursing Health Service.

See Also Goal Of Health Edu¬cation:

The goal of health edu¬cation is to help persons live zestful and produc¬tive lives in an environment that is as free as possible of threatening or damaging conditions (though it may be full of challenges). As a dis¬cipline health education draws content from the physical, biological, medical, and behavioral sci¬ences. Since it is concerned with mental and social, as well as physiological, well-being, health education is a broader field than physical edu¬cation.

World War II brought a renewed focus on the role of the school in promoting good health. The traditional equating of health with physical fitness, and health education with physical edu¬cation, was further perpetuated during this pe¬riod. During the 1960's this concept was replaced by the identification of health education as a discipline separate from physical education. The School Health Education Study, initiated with private funds in 1961, had the most significant impact in establishing health education as a separate discipline.

On The Other Hand See National Health Service:

Official agencies are those supported by tax moneys. These agencies exist at the national health service, state, and local levels. The national health service Institute of Health, the Consumer Protection and Environ¬mental Health Service, and Health Services and Mental Health Administration are all part of the U. S. Public Health Service. This national health service agency is part of the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare.

Under the reorganization the Public Health Service was enlarged to include the Food and Drug Administration; a new agency, the Health Services and Mental Health Adminis¬tration; and the national health service Institutes of Health, which itself was enlarged to include the Bureau of Health Manpower and the national health service Library of Medicine.
