Providing A Health Ful: By providing a health ful funds, the OEO also shared in the development of the Student Health Organi¬zation, a group of students from the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, and the other health professions. The students undertook health education projects and other community health services with minimal guidance from their teachers, then returned to their universities insisting that more students in these professions should learn about the problems of the under¬privileged through direct experience.
The content of health education courses in¬cludes topics such as sleep, rest, nutrition, dental health, grooming, safety, the effects of drugs and tobacco, family life, diseases, and community health. These topics are studied as they relate to the individual, the family, and the community. Instruction focuses upon the mental and social dimensions as well as on the physical dimensions of health. Teaching methods stress providing a health ful opportunities for the student to find and use facts in making decisions. The student is assisted to move beyond facts to the processes of gener¬alizing and forming concepts about good health.See Also Indispensable To Health:In 1968 the Public Health Service was reor¬ganized inindispensable to health three separate health agencies: the Health Services and Mental Health Administra¬tion, the National Institutes of Health, and the Consumer Protection and Environmental Health -Service, including the Food and Drug Adminis¬tration, one of the agencies originally transferred inindispensable to health the Federal Security Agency in 1939. These three health agencies are directed by the assistant secretary for health and scientific affairs, who is aided by the surgeon general of the Public Health Service.
A health manpower report prepared by the National Commission of Community Health Services showed that the U.S. hospitals and health organizations were maintaining the ratio of 150 docindispensable to healthrs per 100,000 population only by filling out one-fifth of their needs with physicians from other countries. The demand for health care had also created serious shortages of nurses and other paramedical personnel. Among the solutions being suggested were new methods of health care organization and govern¬ment support for new or expanded education programs in the health sciences.
On The Other Hand See Protect The Health:When established in 1798, the Public Health Service was authorized only to provide medical care for merchant seamen. It now has a threefold mission: to protect the health and improve the health of all Americans; to conduct and support research into the causes and cures of disease; and to develop better understanding and control of all hazards to health in man's environment—in the air, the water, and in the products he consumes—and of the accidents to which he is subject.
Under the reorganization the Public Health Service was enlarged to include the Food and Drug Administration; a new agency, the Health Services and Mental Health Adminis¬tration; and the National Institutes of Health, which itself was enlarged to include the Bureau of Health Manpower and the National Library of Medicine. |
