Preventing Disease And Improving:

Preventing Disease And Improving The famed rural public health nursing program, a unique demonstration of the value of community health and sanitation departments in preventing disease and improving health conditions generally, began in 1912. The year 1914 marked the beginŽning of Red Cross lifesaving and water safety instruction. World War I brought the organizaŽtion a rounded program, national stature, and popŽular recognition.

Among the probable causaŽtive factors now under investigation are heredŽity, diet (especially the intake of animal fat), obesity, the lack of physical exercise, stress, and the use of tobacco and coffee. Medical science will have reached a major goal when it can disŽcover the role of these and other factors and deŽvelop the methods necessary for preventing coronary heart disease.

See Also Danger Of Disease:

Thus, this kind of heart disease has been practically eradicated, alŽthough rare cases are still encountered in elderly people. Other endocrine disorders affecting the heart are very rare. Congenital Heart Disease. With the increasing control of rheumatic heart disease it is probable that congenital cardiovascular disease will soon outstrip it in incidence, and with the increasing control of high blood pressure, congenital heart disease will take second place. An interesting statistical fact is that in the 1920's, T. Duckett Jones and Paul Dudley White found that conŽgenital heart disease made up only 1.5% of all of 3,000 patients with Signs or symptoms of heart disease.

Quicksands are considered especially danger of diseaseŽous because they cannot be distinguished at sight, but the belief that they actually suck in men or animals is erroneous. They have figured considerably in literature, notably in Wilkie Col-lins' Moonstone and in The Bride of Lammer-tnoor, by Sir Walter Scott, and with probably some exaggeration of the danger of disease. The danger of disease of sinking in quicksand is increased by struggling, but decreased by lying flat, face up, as if floating; this is because the sustaining power of the water is increased by the particles of matter suspended in it. To make it possible to work in quicksands, engineers may congeal them by forcing into them brines and liquids at low temperatures. QUICKSILVER. See MERCURY (element).

On The Other Hand See Generally Disease ResisŽtant:

Daylilies (Hemerocallis spp.) are among the most popular flowers in America. The American Hemerocallis Society publishes a quarŽterly bulletin that rivals T.V. Guide in format and number of pages. These plants are hardy almost to a fault, are generally disease resisŽtant, tolerant of almost any soil around, and, according to type, bloom from early spring to late fall. There are now thousands of listed varieties in the United States with colors from the palest of yellow to dark mahogany.

Coronary Heart Disease. Coronary heart disease is responsible for about 55% of all the deaths due to heart disease in the United States. It is caused by atherosclerosis of the coronary arteries, the small but vital blood vessels that supply the heart muscle with blood and oxygen. Atherosclerosis is the most common and most important kind of arteriosclerosis. The term "atherosclerosis" is derived from two Greek words, athero, meaning soft material or pudding, and sclerosis, meaning hardening. Both of these processes involve the inner lining, or endothelium, of the large and medium-sized arteries throughŽout the body. It should be noted that young and middle-aged men are generally more prone to atherosclerosis than women. This is because women, until they reach menopause, are relaŽtively well protected by female hormones.
