Philosophy And Education: Protestant Education.—During the coloni period in America all education went hand hand with religion. Catechetical and Biblic instruction were a regular part of the curriculu of the schools. Higher education was in t hands of the church, its chief purpose being t! training of ministers.
From the time of the American Revolution the middle of the 19th century a radical transitii took place. The influence of religion gradual declined during and following the revolution, d in part to the disorganization occasioned by tl war and in part to the challenge of the 18th ce tury philosophy and education of the Enlightenment to prevailii dogma.
The schools that were established during the Middle Ages were planned for clerical training. They were conducted in connection with monas¬teries and cathedrals, the curriculum consisting chiefly of theology and a smattering of the liberal arts.
The rise of scholastic philosophy and education brought with it the establishment of the great medieval uni¬versities, beginning in the 12th century. Here theology and doctrine were taught side by side with Jaw, philosophy and education, and science. From this time on, higher education was an accepted function of the church, especially in the training of the clergy.See Also Education And:About 70 colleges and universities offer programs to train health education teachers, and the profession is growing. Members of the pro¬fession feel strongly that health education should not be considered a part of physical education and that physical education should not be a branch of health education. Some high schools now give a half year to physical education and a half year to health instruction.
Forster's Education Act 1870, which heralded compulsory state edu¬cation, made provision for school boards to ensure attendance but they were not compelled to do so, though later Acts strengthened this aspect. More recent Education Acts, however, have reinstated the right of parents to opt to educate their children 'at home', though this has often been made difficult and met with social and administrative dis¬approbation. This was enshrined in the Education Act 1944 where the term 'education otherwise' was coined, and again in Section 7 of the Education Act 1996 which states:
On The Other Hand See Perform¬ances And Education:Egk and Orff are among the best-known German composers of the World War II and postwar eras.
Actually, between the two world wars the dearth of talented German composers of the younger generation is remarkable for a coun¬try so rich in opportunity and tradition. After romanticism had vanished and harmonic novelties had grown stale, Germany had little influence on international developments in music. It retained its reputation, however, for outstanding perform¬ances and education. German-trained artistic personnel was internationally welcome.
Later he played a number of serious roles with indifferent success. These included perform¬ances as Shylock in The Merchant of Venice, Bottom in A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Fagin in Oliver Twist. Goodwin was much in the public eye for his vivid and eccentric personal life and his numerous marriages. He was active and successful in the theater until his death, in New York City, on Jan. 31, 1919. |
