Personal Growth:

Personal Growth Lateral growth in trees frequently begins later than growth in height, but the period of lateral growth is longer. Rates of lateral growth like¬wise are low at the outset, increasing after a few weeks and then diminishing. In view of the long annual period of lateral growth in trees, deleterious environmental conditions may exercise a pronounced effect on growth. In the wood of trees of temperate regions, narrow and wide growth rings may be observed, marking years characterized by unfavorable and favorable con¬ditions for growth.

Government Services.—The rapid growth of the areas around Washington, Richmond, and Hampton Roads reflects the growth of federal and state governmental services since 1930. In 1967, more than 20 percent of the work force was engaged in government services, which since 1933 has been the largest source of Personal growth income in the state (24.5 percent in 1960 com¬pared with the national average of 11.3 percent). This income, mostly from federal agencies, was, after contract construction, growing fastest.

See Also Background For Growth:

Growth Cycles.—Longitudinal and lateral (di¬ametral) growth do not proceed continuously, but rather are cyclical phenomena with periods of growth activity alternating with periods of relative inactivity. One of the best illustrations of the periodic nature of growth in large woody stems is to be found in the annual ring pattern which characterizes the wood of trees of temper¬ate regions. It has been suggested recently that even in the apparently ever-growing trees of the tropical rain forest, cambial growth is not a continuous process.

Affection should be combined with understanding and order. Parents who have this attitude realize that certain limits or bounds have a positive value in providing a stable background for growth. They maintain a certain firmness but do not dominate or super¬vise excessively. They encourage children to explore and experiment with¬out too much supervision or criticism. They are judiciously permissive, him to follow in his father's footsteps. When the new baby comes, it is the older child who is likely to feel displaced in his parents' affection.

On The Other Hand See Ever¬green Growth Of Hemlock:

Crops that mature in a short season and pasturage grasses are found on the foot-hills and valleys, especially along the streams. In some places where a little moisture is carried over the passes, below the snow line, the mountains are covered with the dark ever¬green growth of hemlock, spruce, balsam, fir and tall pines, and still further down are inter¬spersed among them the birch, beech, cherry and various other trees, while along the streams are found groves of cottonwood and willow.

The greater quantum efficiencies of both red and green gallium phosphide electrolumines¬cent diodes attained during the past year were mainly due to improved methods of crystal growth and better p-n junction preparation. The technique of liquid epitaxy was of prime impor¬tance in this development. Although red diodes are presently 50 to 100 times more efficient than green ones, they have approximately the same brightness, because the human eye and certain photographic film are approximately 20 times more sensitive to green light than to red.
