People Speak Greek: The Island of Cyprus is a British possession, most of whose people speak Greek and are ethnically as Greek as their mainland brothers in Athens or Corinth. Britain got Cyprus in 1878, not from Greece but from Ottoman Turkey, and made it a crown colony in 1925. The Greeks have been agitating for years for Enosis, meaning the union of Cyprus with the motherland, but to Britain this Mediterranean outpost, almost within gunŽshot of Asia Minor, is a vital link in defense. Whatever the island's ultimate political fate, it is, and will remain, a paradise of tourism matching even its sister island of Rhodes.
What defines a Greek historically is his lanŽguage and the culture it expresses, not his race. Racially, the Greek people are a composite of the various peoples who have settled in the region over the centuries. That was probably true of the classical Greeks, who were separated from the original Greek-speaking inhabitants of the region by at least 1,000 years. It is certainly the case with the Greeks of today.See Also Known To Speak Of:e. Enunciate clearly and speak slowlv and directly known to speak of the child, f. On The Other Hand See Who Speak Allied:HAMITIC PEOPLES, ha-mit'ik, or Hamites, the name given to several non-Negroid ethnic groups in northern and eastern Africa who are regarded to be of kindred origin and who speak allied languages. According to legend they are deŽscended from Ham, one of the sons of Noah. The Hamitic cradleland was probably in the southern Arabian Peninsula. The Hamitic lanŽguages, closely related to the Semitic, are genŽerally considered to include Ancient Egyptian, as well as the Berber and Cushitic languages n'ow spoken on approximately one fifth of the African continent. The term Hamitic has largely been replaced by the broader term Hamito-Semitic, referring to a language group.
RIBOSE, ri'bos, a five-carbon monosac-charide that was originally prepared from the allied sugar, arabinose (see CARBOHYDRATE). Its name is an anagram of arabinose, with some letters omitted, and has no other significance. For some years after its preparation, ribose remained a mere laboratory curiosity. However, it is now known to be of supreme importance to life, for it and the closely allied compound, deoxyribose, are among the hydrolysis products of the nucleic acids (q.v.). |
