Parents Reading: This teacher asked parents to take most of the responsibility for teaching the sight vocabulary, while he himself taught the spelling patterns. Parents were given advice and materials to provide and play reading games with their children. This method worked extremely well. It was noticeable, though, that where parents did not attend the supporting reading-workshop session, much less progress was made. This reinforces our view that regular contact between parents and teachers is essential if a PACT scheme is to flourish.
After the survey I held a meeting in the nursery for the parents, at which the headteacher spoke about the importance of parents reading to their children. All but three children were represented by one or other of their parents. It was stressed that it is never too early to read stories to your children, even if they are still 'babes in arms'. Many parents felt that it wasn't necessary to read stories until their child was able to converse fairly fluently and could, therefore, make some comment on whether they liked or disliked a story. By the end of the meeting the parents appeared to understand that, by reading to their children, they not only entertained them but were also preparing the ground for the 'learning to read' process.See Also Only Will Parents Bring:There are other possible focuses which can be used to bring parents and teachers together in secondary schools. Discussion groups held for parents can explore the actual subjects taught, as well as more general matters, and sometimes parents can be involved directly in their children's homework. Ebbutt and Barber,30 for example, asked parents to help their first-year children with passages for comprehension covering a range of school subjects, which formed part of a structured programme to help children who had reading difficulties.
Not only will parents bring varying skills and experiences into school but will also have different goals for and expectations of their chilŽdren and of themselves. Often the expectations of the teacher or school can be at odds with those of the parents. As teachers, we are sometimes faced with parents whose values or educational or proŽfessional achievements are removed from our own. One of the most undermining experiences we can have is when a parent's expectations of his or her offspring are vastly disparate from our own.
On The Other Hand See Give Parents A Full:7 We also run a school lending library where they can obtain two books at whatever level they desire. These are changed on a weekly basis. The entire school is organized to give parents a full share in planning and participating in their children's education. Literacy is the key to almost every subject and, as such, is a good way in to real partnership with parents. We try to create an environŽment where children, parents and teachers can be relaxed, confident and secure with each other.
"I certainly hope so," you can tell the envious but skeptical mother. "I'd like to try, and if you don't like the pictures you will be under absolutely no obligation to buy them."
Thus, although you can't give the mother the guarantee which she asks, you can offer her another, the reassuring guarantee of full satisfaction or no charge. For the beginner, this is by far the best way to offer your work. Such an agreeŽment is the strongest assurance you can give to parents that they won't be bilked, which is important in getting orders because unfortunately many parents have had unhappy dealings in the past with operators who were not as ethical as you will be. |
