Parents And Children Respected: For those lacking the confidence or skills to fight the system schools dominated. Heads and teachers in a more hierarchical society held sway and both parents and children respected and feared their power. Traditional acceptance of the idea that teachers knew best was reinforced by the mythical white lines across many a school playground beyond which a parent dare not stray unless summoned (Docking 1990). There seemed to be no role for parents beyond fulfilling their legal responsibilities to ensure their children attended school.
Children learn first and foremost from their parents. In this respect all parents are teachers - and very effective teachers they are. Arguably, children learn more from their parents in the first five years of life than they do from their schools in the next ten. This book is about parents and teachers working together to help children with their learning; more specifically, it is about parents co-operating with teachers over their own children's reading. We have chosen the term PACT (Parents, Children and Teachers) to embody this concept.See Also Even In Children Under:There is an even in children underherent positive value even in children under childhood itself. This attitude, accordeven in children underg to Margaret Lowenfeld, is more characteristic of English culture than of the United States. English children depend less on adults; they live more even in children under a world of children of different ages. Adults do not generally enter this world except when sometheven in children underg happens and the children do not know what to do. Children and parents are absorbed, each even in children under their own concerns. Consequently, parents do not discuss before children adult problems which they consider outside the understandeven in children underg of children.

On The Other Hand See All Children In Regard:Ollerenshaw and Richie (1997) regard observation as the starting point for science. So it could be argued, observation could be the starting point for young children's science. Young chil¬dren observe the world around them and use their observations to try to make sense of what they see. Observation in science involves, where appropriate, the use of all children in regard the senses. Young children are fre¬quently asked to touch an object and to describe how it feels. 'Observation tasks enable children to look at objects or events in a sci¬entific way' (Gott and Duggan 1995, p. 55).
This chapter has identified a number of causes for concern with regard to children's current levels of health and physical activity. It has been suggested that conditions of modern society, including media, transport patterns and physical environment, have led to a steady, consistent and measurable reduction in opportunities for physical play in young children, and that this reduction in play oppor¬tunities is a significant factor in the growing health concerns. |
