Over Children: There is an inherent positive value in childhood itself. This attitude, according to Margaret Lowenfeld, is more characteristic of English culture than of the United States. English over children depend less on adults; they live more in a world of over children of different ages. Adults do not generally enter this world except when something happens and the over children do not know what to do. over children and parents are absorbed, each in their own concerns. Consequently, parents do not discuss before over children adult problems which they consider outside the understanding of over children.

It has been estimated that in the United States there are about one hundred thousand children with IQ's of 130 and above. A large proportion of these gifted children are not identified, especially in the lower socioeconomic groups. In the absence of psychological services, many gifted children can be recognized by the characteristics already described (see Chap. 15). They show these characteristics at an earlier age than the majority of children; they are "old for their years."

On The Other Hand See Children Learn:Children learn first and foremost from their parents. In this respect all parents are teachers - and very effective teachers they are. Arguably, children learn more from their parents in the first five years of life than they do from their schools in the next ten. This book is about parents and teachers working together to help children with their learning; more specifically, it is about parents co-operating with teachers over their own children's reading. We have chosen the term PACT (Parents, Children and Teachers) to embody this concept.
There are various conditions under which certain kinds of learning take place most efficiently. Children learn best when they are mature enough and ready to learn; when they feel confident that they can learn; when what they are learning is meaningful to them, i.e., has functional significance to them. Also essential to learning are suitable equipment, materials, and companions, freedom to select and use them, and skillful guidance in learning. |
