Outdoor Activities: 2. Winter activities on farm, indoor and outdoor. Maple sugar.
Hillman (1993) analysed these trends in terms of 'independent mobility', that is, children's freedom to take part in outdoor activities, and found that there had been a decline with time. His survey of 7-11 year olds found a significant reduction in independent mobility between 1971 and 1990. For example, only one quarter of that group were allowed to use their cycles on the road in 1990, compared with that physical activities are important for health and fitness, but this does not necessarily lead them to take part in such activities; infants and even older children seem to have an innate sense of immortality, and long-term health benefits lack immediate appeal.See Also Storage Activities:The economically ac¬tive part of the population of Santos engages in transport, communication, and storage activities, or other activities related to the port. Labor unions are highly developed among workers in port activities. The chief industrial products are wheat flour, refined sugar, bread, furniture, and refined salt. Fishing also provides employment for many. Santos is a banking center not only because of the port but also because it is the largest coffee market center in the world. It is also a seaside resort, with impressive beaches at Sao Vicente and Guaruja. There are several buildings, monuments, and ruins which date back to the colonial 16th and 17th centuries. Pop. (1962) 254,000.
Temperatures.—Storage temperatures range from 30° to 40°F. or more, depending upon the kind of fruit or the variety stored. While tem¬peratures as high as 40° to 50°F. are an aid in retarding the process of ripening and eventual decay, the standard cold-storage temperatures of 30° to 32°F. are more effective, since for every 10° rise in centigrade temperature (18°F.) the respiration rate approximately doubles. On the other hand, the temperature must not be lowered to an extent which would injure the tissues. The killing temperature of most fruits is about 29°F. or lower.
Methods.—Three basic methods of storage may be distinguished: common or air-cooled stor¬age ; temperature-controlled storage; and modi-fied-atmosphere storage.
On The Other Hand See Extra-curricular Activities:Extra-curricular activities, whether after school, during lunchtime or at weekends, offer another valuable opportunity for extending chil¬dren's participation. A number of agencies have raised concerns over the limited after-school sports provision in some schools, leading the pursuits. Different children enjoy different activities, and the breadth Of the current Physical Education curriculum is an important recog¬nition of this fact.
There are numerous ways in which this aim can be achieved, and it presents a real and worthwhile challenge for teachers to generate ideas. For a start, though, it is useful to identify four broad areas that offer immediate opportunities for physical activity development and encouragement: out-of-school physical activity; informal play; organ¬ised extra-curricular activities; Physical Education lessons. |
