Oldest House Still:

Oldest House Still There are also a little theater group, a civic ballet, and a symphony orchestra. Points of interest include Whitehall (1813), the oldest house still standing in Greenville; Christ Church (1851), the oldest church, which is a good ex¬ample of American Gotbic architecture; and Poinsett Bridge, designed by the diplomat Joel R. Poinsett.

The oldest house-in the city is Wakefield, a frame structure erected in 1760 by Joel Lane, from whom the land for the capitol site was purchased, and in whose house the state assembly had met in 1781, in the darkest hours of the American Revo¬lution. Preserved as a historic shrine is the small, frame house in which was born Andrew Johnson, 17th president of the United States and one of the city's own sons. Johnson is again honored with two other sons of the state, Andrew Jackson and James K. Polk, in a monument in Capitol Square, unveiled in 1948.

See Also Playing House:

During these years playing house ball takes precedence over games of chase and playing house with toys. Imaginative play decreases during this age period. For girls there is a rapid decline in doll-play toward the end of this period. Boys would probably show a similar decline in their interest in playing house space cadets, pilots, G-men, and cowboys. At thirteen or fourteen there is a marked falling off of interest in childhood games. No abrupt cessation of any specific play activity, however, occurs for all children at any age level. Changes in play interests are gradual. Differences in play activities between age groups are smaller than those among children of the same age; play interests overlap from age to age.

On The Other Hand See Installation Of House Meters:

Meters.—The installation of house meters mfronts owners with a personal responsibility ir the amount of water used and soon produces marked reduction in consumption; but as the jvelty of responsibility fades, the rate starts to se. Many large cities, such as New York re-lire meters only of industries, commercial es-blishments, and large apartment houses.

Waste and Control.—Unaccounted-for water, which passes through the master meters at the sources of supply but not through the con¬sumers' meters, constitutes 20 to 50 percent of the master meter reading. It comprises water lost in leakage in pipes and services, and water used for street sprinkling, snow removal, sewer flush¬ing, and fire fighting. Undue waste of water proves a serious consideration when it requires the purveyor to seek additional sources or to install larger pumps and pipes; it can be curbed, how¬ever, by public appeal and ordinances prohibiting lawn sprinkling and other purposes in an emer¬gency, by waste surveys, and by installation of meters.
