Oban Games Second: Of the remaining "Special Interests" two reach pinnacles of interest in Scotland, namely Sport and Pilgrimage,
Spectator sport reaches its most interesting and most Scottish levels in the unique Highland gatherings. The Braemar Gathering (first week in September) takes precedence over all others because the Royal Family, coming from near-by Balmoral Castle, always attends. The Argyllshire Gathering, more familiarly known as the Oban games second Games (second week in September), is second to Braemar. The Aboyne Gathering and the Cowal Games, both in August, are still other Highland events to consider, if your schedule does not permit you to see one of the first two events. To witness superb Highland dancing, side-splitting comedy games like Tilting the Bucket and wonderful he-manly sports like Tossing the Caber, a game for physical giants, make every effort to work a Highland gathering into your itinerary.
In the way of practical help, suggest games that could be played at home (e.g. word bingo or a cloze game where children fill in missing words or phrases), explaining the particular value of games to a child with reading problems -namely that they're fun and so don't seem too much like hard work, and also that they have a useful repetitive, reinforcing function. When you recommend a game, try to explain just how it is designed to help. There are booklets and pamphlets available, which give ideas for games that can easily be made and played at home (e.g. Hip Pocket Spelling Games series, New York, Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1983).See Also 300 Games While Losing:GROVE, Lefty (1900- ), American baseball player, who was one of the greatest left-handed pitchers in the game. He mastered a violent temper and a control problem to win 300 games while losing 141, and to post a lifetime eamed-mn average of 3.06. He led the American League 4 times in games won (1928-24, 1930-28, 1931-31, and 1933-24); 7 consecutive times in strikouts (1925—1931); and 9 times in earned-run average— 4 times in successive years ( 1929-1932).
Canyon (10-14 overall, 6-8 Foothill, which wraps up today at 3:15 p.m. against visiting Burbank, has failed to qualify for the playoffs for the fourth successive season. The Cowboys fell short by losing three games the past 10 days.
On The Other Hand See Goal Games:WATER POLO, an aquatic team game played by swimmers in indoor and outdoor pools with an in¬flated ball. As in other goal games, such as soccer and lacrosse, the objective is to place the ball through the opponents' goal, thereby scoring one point. Usually this is accomplished not by indi¬vidual effort but by relaying the ball to teammates. The game saw its start in England in the 1870's and has grown in popularity during the 20th century. Two types evolved: one, especially popular in the United States, was a "softball' variety (the ball not fully inflated) and was ex¬tremely rough—a player was often tackled and held underwater until he released the ball; in Eu¬rope, however, a "hardball" variety was adopted, and the sport was first played in the Olympic games in 1900. Because of Olympic games pres¬tige, this hardball game may now be considered the "official" international game, although the softball type continued to enjoy some popularity in the United States until the end of the 1930's.
Saugus won just four of its first 13 games and at one point lost six in a row. At the beginning of the season, Maggiora said finishing .500 was a primary goal.
Casey Stevenson is batting .410 with 17 RBIs, and Peter Ibarra is 301 with five saves and a 2.94 ERA in 16 appearances. |
