Nneb Nurse:

Nneb Nurse Eleanor had visited her class on three occasions during the Summer term. She had met her teacher, NNEB nursery nurse, other members of her class and had explored her classroom. The teacher had noted that Eleanor played alongside other children, that she had a good con¬centration span, enjoyed stories and had a good singing voice. Preschool records were with the parents and to be handed over at the beginning of the Autumn term. Eleanor and her parents had a meet¬ing with the teacher in the week before she started school. During this meeting Eleanor was able to confidently talk about the pictures she had drawn and the picture sequencing she had done.

The Duke of Plaza-Toro relates that his daughter Casilda had been betrothed to the infant son of the King of Barataria, on whose abdication the boy had been spirited away to Venice. The Duke learns that the Prince, identifiable only by his nurse, has be¬come a gondolier. The Inquisitor declares that, until the nurse can be found, the gondoliers must reign jointly in Barataria. The nurse eventually reveals that the Duke's drummer Luiz is the real prince. Luiz becomes king of Barataria with Casilda as his queen.

On The Other Hand See Nurse Tells:

As with all the problem situations described, the child's thumb-sucking causes the parents a great deal of anxiety. The greater the anxiety, the greater are the parents' attempts to correct the "problem behavior." How¬ever, if the child ordinarily gets little love and affection from his parents, he will be motivated to continue and even increase this behavior. Thus "problem behavior" for the parents becomes "attention-getting behavior" for the child. Since these parents often see problems in much of their child's behavior, the child learns a whole repertory of attention-getting de¬vices. Nature of negativism. At some time during his second or third year the child frequently becomes "contrary." He says no even to reasonable sug¬gestions. "Stubbornness," the mother may call it. He "wants what he wants when he wants it." He insists upon doing the opposite of what the mother or nurse tells him to do. With girls, this kind of behavior appears to reach a peak near the end of the second year; with the boys, near the end of the third year. It appears to last longer and to be more severe with boys. After the third year it tends to decrease.

"The Vicar of Wakefield." The same principles underlie his only novel, The Vicar of Wakefield (1766). Dr. Primrose, the genial country clergy¬man who tells the story, records the misfortunes that assail his family when they try to rise above the humble but happy existence to which they have been born. Its idealized picture of rural life, its melodramatic action, and its sentimental mor¬alizing made the novel a popular favorite in the 19th century. Modern readers, however, are more likely to prize the ironic overtones that mark the first half of the novel: the Vicar tells more than he realizes about his own character when he describes the frailties of others.
