Newborn Baby Irritable: Emotional disturbances occurring late in pregnancy seem to be detrimental to the child for weeks or, in some instances, for months. If prenatal influences such as these make the newborn baby irritable, nervous, and prone to cry, they may affect his mother's feelings toward him. She may reject the child in part because he is less desirable than she had hoped. Thus the infant's prenatal environment may influence his initial adaptability to his new world and the consequent responses that he evokes.
Scientific experiments and clinical study are answering many ques¬tions about the newborn baby: What is his physical appearance? What are the Signs of good development? What movements may he be expected to make? What does he see and hear and feel? Does he have a unique per¬sonality? If one has had experience with newborn babies, or has seen cer¬tain films, which are the best substitute for firsthand observation (see pages 47-48), then information from books will be more interesting and meaningful.See Also Baby Blue:Pale blue walls and whitewashed floorboards create a bright and modern look. An all-white scheme can look rather stark, but just adding chalky baby blue to the walls gives the space a softer, more easy-going feel. Cushions and throws add splashes of bright cerise, blue and pink, and these can be swapped around or added to any time to change the feel.
Septa/ Defects. Ventricular septal defects, when isolated and small, cause little harm and allow a long life if there is adequate protection against bacterial infection of the defect. When compli¬cated by a high degree of right ventricular in¬fundibular or pulmonary valve stenosis, it gives rise to the morbus ceruleus, or blue baby. The blue coloration of the baby's skin is due to a lack of oxygen resulting from much of the blood by¬passing the lungs. Instead of traveling to the lungs from the right ventricle, the blood passes through the septal opening directly into the left side of the heart, from where it is pumped into the aorta. This condition requires surgical cor¬rection if the child is to survive.
