Moral Education:

Moral Education A third question pertains to the moral dimension in spiritual expe¬rience. We are not so much concerned with how spiritual develop¬ment supports moral education but with the relationship between the two. Moral education is in part the process of moral reasoning, of the development of sound moral judgement but it is also a process of developing and engaging in relationships. There is an issue here that we may trace back through the history of moral philosophy, that is the view that on the one hand moral behaviour is a matter of reason and enlightened understanding and on the other that it is a matter of feeling, of love and empathy for one's fellow human beings.

Certainly moral reasoning will play a part in pupils' moral education but the spiritual dimension in relation to moral behaviour is more closely aligned with that part of feelings in that process. Questions that are raised in the context of spiritual development such as those of per¬sonal identity and worth, purposes 'in' and 'of life and the possibil¬ity of 'otherness' (SCAA 1996, p. 6) etc., the environment within which young people develop relationships and the discussion of matters of moral judgement will intimately interact with the development of per¬sonal identity and worth.

ACS Award in Chemical Education. The $1,000 American Chemical Society Award in Chemical Education is sponsored by the Scien¬tific Apparatus Makers Association and is given in recognition for contributions to the teaching of organic chemistry. In 1967 the recipient was Louis F. Fieser, Sheldon Emery professor of organic chemistry at Harvard University. In col¬laboration with his wife, Fieser has written many textbooks and laboratory manuals. He was cited for his teaching innovations, including the use of tetrahedral models to teach stereochemistry, as well as for his research.

In chemical education the high school text¬book prepared by the Chemical Education Ma¬terials Study was revised by three separate publishers, and the first recipients of the Conant Award for outstanding high school chemistry teaching were named. The award, sponsored by E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Co., Inc., was to be presented annually to teachers in six sections of the U.S. The undergraduate level Advisory Council on College Chemistry continued its projects on modern teaching aids, new labora¬tory experiments, and a survey of chemistry teaching in junior colleges.

On The Other Hand See Public Education In:

Education and Cultural Life. Elementary and secondary education in Hartford is provided by public schools and Roman Catholic parochial schools. In the public sector an elected, non-partisan board of nine members develops educa¬tional policy within limits imposed by the state department of education and appoints a super¬intendent as administrator. Many well-known preparatory schools for boys and day and board¬ing schools for girls are in the area.

Religion in the Public Schools.—Three significant developments in religion and public education in the United States show a trend toward a discriminating use of religion in the public schools: (1) Widespread use of "released time" is made, one hour per week being set aside from the public school schedule for religious instruction by special teachers.
