Monastic Family Has Now: All of the various forms of monastic commu¬nity have continued to exist in modern times. From the 15th to the 18th century, external cir¬cumstances led some Benedictine congregations to adopt a centralized system in which the monk'smembership was in the congregation as a whc but the traditional Benedictine emphasis on 1 individual monastic family has now been univi sally restored.
These monastic hospitals, however, had little in common with the modern institutions. Fre¬quently, they were little more than small houses providing some sort of nursing care. Owing to their dual nature and function, it is difficult to establish how much the monastic hospitals were actually used for the care of the sick. It is likely that all degrees of variation, ranging from in¬firmaries devoted almost exclusively to the treat¬ment and nursing of the sick to simple lodging houses, existed in the medieval monasteries. On the whole, from about the 8th to the 12th cen¬tury the monastic hospital was virtually the only institution in Europe whose chief task was to care for the sick.See Also Family Enterprises:In 1956 he initiated a program for building a model school system in Morrilton.
