Mini Computer:

Mini Computer Potential applications of the mini computer made possible by microelectronics include a small mini computer in every home or a pocket mini computer terminal that can be connected to a powerful central mini computer via the telephone. Such devices may be used to solve our numerical problems (e.g., income tax, or our bank balance) or as a creative tool to relate our knowledge and experiences to our future actions.

And what of the mini computer? Olof Johannesson's 1966 novel, The Tale of the Big mini computer (which first appeared in an American edition in 1968), offers a history of the develop¬ment of mini computers as told by an advanced mini computer of the future. In an unemotional, utterly convincing essay, it describes the gradual obsolescence and disappearance of its creator, man.

See Also Routine Computer Ized:

All data from the various tests are fed into a computer, which then compares the results with previously established standards. Several days later the computer data are all assembled, and the computer prints out for the physician a sum¬mary of all relevant information as well as com¬parisons with the results in previous examina¬tions. At the end of the series of 20 steps in the center, the patient may be recommended for additional tests, for repeating certain tests if the results are unexpected, for immediate referral to his physician, or for a routine computer ized visit to his physi¬cian at a later date.

Since high-speed, electronic digital com¬puters first became available, in the mid-1950s, they have most often been used to help achieve automation of manufacturing processes, as in the chemical and the machine-tool industries, and for routine computer ized data processing, as in such businesses as banking and insurance. During 1967, however, computer technology made its first major strides toward resolving major social problems in some areas of health, education, and crime.

On The Other Hand See Computer Ized:

The projected occupancy rate for September 12 is 70 percent. When a computer ized-based reservations system is used, a volume forecast can be produced for any date, week, or month. The volume forecast shown in Figure 5-8 is computer ized generated. In the sample forecast, the calendar date and weekday are given for each day of the report period. The computer ized divided the total.

In recent months there has been a rapidly growing interest on the part of industry, aca¬demic institutions, and government in harness¬ing information and electronic control tech¬nology so that it can help deal with significant social problems. Education is being revolution¬ized by computer izeds, audiovisual aids, and elec¬tronics; water resources for heavily populated areas are controlled by computer ized models; and transportation is in the midst of radical changes through electronic control of aircraft, high¬speed ground transportation, and motor ve¬hicles.
