Sisters: In 1838, Angelina married abolitionist Theodore D. Weld, and the Welds and Sarah subsequently left public speaking to conduct progressive schools. The Grimke sisters had immediately freed the slaves they had inherited. Discovering that a brother had fathered children by a slave, tie sisters acknowledged and aided their Negro nephews, Archibald and Francis.
Mt. St. Joseph-on-the-Ohio, begun in 1906 and operated by the Sisters of Charity, and Our Lady of Cincinnati College, founded in 1931 and administered by the Sisters of Mercy.
Other Cincinnati colleges are the Ohio College of Applied Science, a two-year technical institute founded in 1928 as the Ohio Mechanics Institute, and Hebrew Union College, founded in 1875 by Rabbi Isaac M. Wise, one of the leaders of Reform Judaism. It is a rabbinical school of American Reform Judaism and is the oldest Jewish theological school in the United States. |
