Mental Health Research:

Mental Health Research Official agencies are those supported by tax moneys. These agencies exist at the national, state, and local levels. The National Institute of Health, the Consumer Protection and EnvironŽmental Health Service, and Health Services and Mental Health Administration are all part of the U. S. Public Health Service. This national agency is part of the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare.

Dr. Platt is professor of physics and acting director of the Mental Health Research Institute at the UniŽversity of Michigan. He received the U.S. Public Health Service Career Award and is a member of the Service's National Advisory Research and Resources Council. Dr. Platt is a Fellow of the Physics Society, the Biophysics Society, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

See Also Levels Of Health And Physical:

This chapter has identified a number of causes for concern with regard to children's current levels of health and physical activity. It has been suggested that conditions of modern society, including media, transport patterns and physical environment, have led to a steady, consistent and measurable reduction in opportunities for physical play in young children, and that this reduction in play opporŽtunities is a significant factor in the growing health concerns.

World War II brought a renewed focus on the role of the school in promoting good health. The traditional equating of health with physical fitness, and health education with physical eduŽcation, was further perpetuated during this peŽriod. During the 1960's this concept was replaced by the identification of health education as a discipline separate from physical education. The School Health Education Study, initiated with private funds in 1961, had the most significant impact in establishing health education as a separate discipline.

On The Other Hand See Community Health:

A health manpower report prepared by the National Commission of Community Health Services showed that the U.S. hospitals and health organizations were maintaining the ratio of 150 doctors per 100,000 population only by filling out one-fifth of their needs with physicians from other countries. The demand for health care had also created serious shortages of nurses and other paramedical personnel. Among the solutions being suggested were new methods of health care organization and governŽment support for new or expanded education programs in the health sciences.

The content of health education courses inŽcludes topics such as sleep, rest, nutrition, dental health, grooming, safety, the effects of drugs and tobacco, family life, diseases, and community health. These topics are studied as they relate to the individual, the family, and the community. Instruction focuses upon the mental and social dimensions as well as on the physical dimensions of health. Teaching methods stress providing opportunities for the student to find and use facts in making decisions. The student is assisted to move beyond facts to the processes of generŽalizing and forming concepts about good health.
