Medicine And Confucian Although Wu Ti exercised a strong personal rule, he sought talented medicine and Confucian trained men to help ad¬minister the empire. Recognizing that most of these were Confucian in outlook, he sponsored Confucianism medicine and Confucian banned from his court sup¬porters of the Legalist philosophy, which had been dominant in the Ch'in dynasty. In 135 he established official specialists of the Five Classics (q.v.)—the works now considered to embody the essence of Confucian wisdom—medicine and Confucian in 124 he founded an academy in which prospective gov¬ernment officials received a Confucian education under the specialists. Eventually, much of the lower bureaucracy was composed of men whom the government had given a Confucian education.

*EAT LEARNING, a Confucian classic at-buted to various Chinese scholars but usually Confucius' disciple Tseng Tzu (5th century c.). A chapter of the Book of Rites, one of e Five Classics (q.v.), it has been considered separate work since the mid-Sung dynasty 70-1276), when Neo-Confucian scholars classi-d it as the first of the Four Books (q.v.) ndamental to Confucianism.

QUAIN, kwan, Jones, British anatomist: b. Ratheahy, County Cork, Ireland, November 1796; d. London, England, Jan. 31, 1865. He studied medicine in Dublin and in Paris, in which latter city he translated and edited Maurice Mar¬tinet's Manual of Pathology (1826; 4th ed., 1935). During 1831-1835 he was professor of general anatomy in University College, London. His other publications include Elements of Descrip¬tive and Practical Anatomy (1828; 10th ed., 1890) and (with Erasmus Wilson) a series of Anatomi¬cal Plates, 2 vols. (1836-1842).

GOGARTY, go'gsr-te, Oliver St. John (1878-1957), Irish author and physician, who was the prototype of the character Buck Mulligan in James Joyce's Ulysses. Born in Dublin on Aug. 17, 1878, Gogarty studied at Trinity College, Dublin, and at Oxford and received his medical degree from the Royal College of Surgeons in 1907. From 1922 to 1936 he was a senator in the parliament of the Irish Free State. He settled in the United States in 1939 and died in New York City on Sept. 22, 1957.

He was instrumental in founding the Halifax Medical College and held several chairs there, also serving as president for several years. He was for 16 years visiting physician at the City Hospital, superintendent of the Hospital for In¬sane for 15 years and later served at the Vic¬toria General Hospital. He was deeply inter¬ested in securing legislation governing the study and practice of medicine in Nova Scotia; was secretary of the Provincial Board of Health in 1893-1904, and afterward was chief health officer for Nova Scotia. He was subsequently retired on a pension. Deceased.

ROLPH, rolf, John, Canadian politician and physician: b. Thornbury, England, March 4, 1793; d. Mitchell, Ontario, Canada, Oct. 19, 1870. He studied law and medicine, emigrated to Canada in 1812, and in 1821 was called to the bar. He en¬gaged in law practice and later also practiced medi¬cine. He served in the Assembly of Upper Canada from 1824 to 1837. With William Lyon Mackenzie (1795-1861) he planned the insurrection of 1837 and upon its failure sought safety in the United States. After the amnesty of 1843 he returned to Canada and sat in the Canadian Parliament from 1845 until his retirement from politics in 1857. He afterward devoted himself to the practice of medicine and founded the Peoples' School of Medicine, which later became a faculty of the University of Toronto.
