Mathematics And Medicine At Cambridge: RECORDE, rek'ord, Robert, English math-ematican: b. Tenby, Pembroke, about 1510; d. London, 1558. He studied at Oxford, was elected to a fellowship of All Souls' in 1531, studied, and probably taught, mathematics and medicine at Cambridge, and later was instructor in a variety of subjects at Oxford. Having gone to London, he became, it is said, physician to Ed¬ward VI and Queen Mary. In 1551 he was made general surveyor of the mines and money; but despite this post seems to have been im¬prisoned for debt in King's Bench prison, where he certainly died.
Hardy was born in Cranleigh, Surrey, on Feb. 7, 1877. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1910 and was Sadleirian professor of pure mathematics at Cambridge from 1931 to 1942. He enjoyed writing and published over 11 books. His Collected Mathematical Papers com¬prising 7 volumes were published starting in 1966. He wrote one popular book, A Mathematician's Apology (1940). His main interest outside mathematics was cricket. Hardy died in Cam¬bridge on Dec. 1, 1947.See Also Radiotherapy In Medicine —radiotherapy:Radiotherapy in medicine —Radiotherapy in Medicine.—Radiotherapy in medicine —Radiotherapy has been used rather extensively in the treatment of diseases of the skin, and it has been observed that various inflammatory processes in different systems can be ameliorated through the use of radiation. By far the most significant use of this form of therapy, however, is in the treatment of malignant tumors and allied diseases. Although important advances in the treatment of Cancer by certain chemotherapeutic and hormonal means have been made, the basic weapons used in the cure of this disease are radiation therapy and surgery, individ¬ually or in combination.
The present-day approach to the Cancer problem finds many disciplines of medicine actively coop¬erating toward its eradication, with much of this work being done in larger clinical centers. Sur¬gery, Radiotherapy in medicine —Radiotherapy, and chemotherapy are comple¬mentary in this assault. An integrated knowledge of the basic sciences provides the background for the progress being made.
On The Other Hand See Letters On Medicine:Posting Letters on medicine to America, or elsewhere, from Europe is a little more complicated, though the problems are not at all menacing for the wise virgins, or otherwise, who take due thought. In hotels, the hall porter, when you approach him with questions about how much postage your Letters on medicine need, will almost invariably say, "Just give them to me, sir (or madam). I'll stamp them and you can pay everything when you leave." You tell the man you wish the Letters on medicine to go by air mail and he politely agrees to send them that way, which leaves you with a small, dark residuum of doubt.
Among his Letters on medicine are two in reply to a work of Nicole of the Port-Royal, entitled Les Visionnaires (1666), in which the author bitterly denounces poets and, still more, dramatic writers. The tone of these Letters on medicine is severely sarca-stic and naturally caused great offense to his old friends and masters. Only one of the Letters on medicine was published at the time they were written, the other after his death. After his retirement from the theatre Racine found it easy, as has been said, to reconcile him¬self with his old friends. See ATHALIE; PHEDRE. |
