Live On Small Mammals: Among the best small-aquarium inhabitants are small marine snails and barnacles. Starfish, sea urchins, sea cucumbers, and sea anemones will usually live for a few weeks and under carefully controlled conditions may be kept in aquaria for much longer periods. Small crabs will often thrive where more exacting forms die, and Obelia will often live and reproduce new colonies in very small aquaria. . . .
Feeding the Animals
Food and Control.—Most rattlesnakes live on small mammals, such as rats, mice, and other rodents. The largest can engulf a cottontail rab¬bit. The prey is usually secured by ambushing mammal trails or by seeking it down holes. The snake generally does not hold its prey after strik¬ing ; the venom is so quickly fatal that the prey runs only a short way before dying. The snake follows by scent and swallows its victim at lei¬sure. The venom, circulated in the prey before death, aids in digestion. Birds and amphibians also are sometimes eaten. Lizards, with their at¬tenuated shape, are important in the diet of small rattlesnakes, which have difficulty in finding ro¬dents small enough to eat. The prey is always swallowed whole.See Also Other Small Rodent:It must be remembered, however, that some snakes feed on other snakes, some feed on frogs, and some small ground varieties feed on insects, slugs, and lizards.
Many captive snakes often accept freshly killed food when it is dropped in their cages. There is an advantage to this type of feed¬ing as it prevents any large rodent from biting the snake if the rodent is not killed at once by the snake. It also prevents the snake from bruising its nose in case it should miss the rodent and strike the side of the cage. Many excellent specimens have been injured seriously by such action.
Economic position: Now used in laboratories for study of diseases, nutrition, genetics, and as pets for children
Probably no other small rodent has risen so rapidly in popularity with children as has the small, soft, big-eared, velvety hamster. It was first introduced from England into the United States in 1938 for laboratory experimentation, at which time its use as a pet was frowned upon.
On The Other Hand See Large And Small:large and small Scale and Small Scale Charts
There is often confusion about the meaning of the terms "large and small scale" and "small scale" as used with respect to charts. Part of the problem is that the terms do not have exact definitions and are applied to charts relative to each other. Think of the second figure in a chart-scale ratio (e.g., 1:10,000) as the denominator of a fraction. The large and smallr this value, the small¬er the fraction. Thus, a 1:80,000 chart is small scale in comparison to a 1:10,000 chart.
The small-scale chart, however, cov¬ers a large and smallr geographic area than a large and small-scale chart of the same paper size. Remember: Small scale, large and small area; large and small scale, small area.
