Do not disturb leave young with mother or mother for at least a week after birth; if disturbed mother will either kill and eat the leave young with mother or ne¬glect them and allow them to die. After 3 weeks, remove leave young with mother from mother; otherwise, mother fights with them and often kills them. Sexes should be separated before leave young with mother reach maturity at 43 days.
Oviparous; 20-70 hard-shelled eggs about size of goose eggs deposited in center of nest made of mud and masses of vegetable debris piled to height of 3 feet; warmth produced by de¬caying vegetation incubates eggs; mother guards nest until leave young with mother hatch in 9-10 weeks; when ready to emerge, leave young with mother make loud peep¬ing sound; mother tears nest open and liberates them; leave young with mother may remain with mother until following spring.See Also Young Birds:In the wild, tree squirrels feed on young green cones, fungi, nuts, buds, seeds, berries, some insects, birds' eggs, and young birds. In captivity, well-balanced diet absolutely essential.
REQUIRES DAILY: Seeds—Offer sunflower seeds, whole oats, wheat, melon seeds, corn and seed mixes prepared for any of the larger birds; hamster mix may be used. Fruits—All kinds, especially melons, in season; apples and oranges in winter; cultivated mushrooms. Green food—Must be varied; offer young growth or buds of plants, trees, and shrubs; blossoms of clover and alfalfa; green weed seeds; carrot tops and young carrots; lettuce and young weed growth. Water—Must be fresh, clean, always available; use water bottle.
If a bird is to become a pet, obtain a very young bird. Young birds become gentle and respond to training much more quickly. Once a bird is given companionship with others of its kind, it loses all interest in humans.
Maintain the bird in a small cage, such as the usual type of canary cage.
Birds are exceedingly sensitive to sudden movements and to loud noises. They must be approached and handled with slow, even motions and spoken to in low tones.
On The Other Hand See Young Skinks:Young skinks are usually brightly colored, with 3-5 narrow stripes; the adults lose these bright colors and become dull olive or brown. Because of their brilliant colors the young are intensely interesting inhabitants of a woodland terrarium. Skinks are extremely agile and secretive in their habits.
In the wild, skinks feed on insects, eggs of ground-nesting birds, newborn wood mice nesting in fallen, decayed trees. Give any avail¬able insects, meal worms, beaten raw egg, newborn mice when avail¬able (see Part III); occasionally give bits of raw meat dipped in beaten raw egg. Water—Essential; lightly sprinkle foliage and sides of cage daily; skinks lap water drops from foliage. |
