Leading Teacher Training:

Leading Teacher Training The College has been recognised as a leading teacher training institution and so, as teacher educators, we seek in this and the com¬panion publication, Teaching Young Children, to share some of our ideas and to encourage the debate and disagreement which are the Signs of a strong and healthy democracy. In particular, within that debate, we want parents, educators, teachers, politicians and policy makers to discuss what education is for and what childhood is for - and to explore the meaning of some of the responses to these questions.

The emphasis on the National Curriculum, however, and the introduction of set competencies, now standards, for newly qualified teachers have resulted in few initial training courses offering thorough nursery training. The knowledge and skills, like child development, essential to successful early years practice have been neglected. Denise Hevey and Audrey Curtis (in Pugh 1996) review teacher training for the early years and emphasise the need for management and leadership skills and the ability to work with parents and professionals from other dis¬ciplines.

See Also Over The Teacher Said:

After a few days the teacher noted that Eleanor was fairly comfort¬able in school and was happy to talk about the games she was play¬ing. The teacher noted: 'Eleanor enthusiastically told me the names she had given to all the plastic play people/ After about a week Eleanor began to greet the teacher when they met in the morning and she usually had some news to report. The teacher felt that this was a good sign that Eleanor was settling in well.

Should a child love his teacher? Yes, if "love" is taken to mean a warm, constructive relation in which the child is truly valued and helped to develop his best potentialities. No, if it means a relationship that is intense and meets the emotional needs of the teacher at the expense of the child. A teacher's strong personal affection for one child may lead to favoritism, which children keenly resent. Or it may make the child over the teacher said¬sensitive to the teacher's opinion.

On The Other Hand See Human Teacher:

Clearly, electronic teaching systems will not replace the human teacher but will make him more effective; no machine can handle every problem that may arise in the learning proc¬ess. Such systems are "talking" books and "listening" books that will relieve the teacher of the more routine teaching re¬sponsibilities, freeing him for the more challenging opportuni¬ties of helping the students who need special attention.
