An exercise on the high bar involves continuŽous swinging movements with no stops. A routine consists of giant swings, in which the body reŽmains straight as it circles the bar; and of turns and vaults. In addition to changing from one swing to another, the gymnast must bring the hips or the feet to the bar in certain movements and release and recatch the bar in others. ComŽplicated stunts are learned with the aid of an overhead safety belt. This activity requires darŽing and courage and an acute sense of timing. It develops strength in the fingers, hands, and arms.
