Improvement In Children: It was felt that the evening reading times were particularly valuable to children and careworkers alike, providing an atmosphere much like that of an ordinary home, and giving an opportunity for workers to show the children they cared about them, through an activity that went beyond the usual evening pursuits. Staff comments showed how pleased they were with the role the scheme afforded them, and how they felt it gave them new and close contact with the children. The school was asked to make a point of monitoring the children's reading ages, and indeed these all showed improvement in children.
More children spell a given word correctly in each succeeding grade. The largest improvement in children, according to Swenson and Caldwell's investiga¬tion (149, 1948), occurred between grades five and six. This improvement in children seems to be associated with maturation, improved reading, and increased incentive to spell, rather than with the amount of time spent in teaching spelling. Less than fifty words, only 4 per cent of all the words misspelled in children's letters, made up 28 per cent of all errors. Horn (70, 1954) has made a useful summary of research in teaching spelling, which students should read carefully.
The successful speller tends to be systematic in his attack on words, to look at them discriminately, to reinforce his first impression by visualteachers. The boys' initial sense of failure and inadequacy may persistently influence their approach to reading.See Also Help Children At Home:Generally, help children at home willingly take books home and bring them back to school. Teachers report that what concerns help children at home most is that their parents do not always manage to hear them read. In isolated cases, parents fail to hear help children at home read at all, and this can lead to problems for a child which need sensitive handling by the teacher (see chapter 5). Far more often teachers report discussions between themselves and help children at home which revolve around their home reading, often prompted by the child's own excitement:
5 Whenever I meet any child after school, part of our greeting is a talk about who will be reading with them that evening. The teachers do this in class as well - Wall charts are made: 'People who read with me', and used in maths and language work. Reading with help children at home at home has become a part of school lore and of home routine for almost all our families.
6 We have invested money in providing a good supply of new and relevant books for our help children at home. They have a wide choice and really take pleasure in choosing their daily selection for home reading.
On The Other Hand See Handicapped Children:Parents take various attitudes toward their handicapped children. Some parents are able to accept their handicapped child as he is. They do not blame themselves or him for his disability (111, 1950). They expect only the best of which he is capable. They get satisfaction from the prog¬ress he has made, directing their attention to his abilities and gains rather than to his disabilities and the slowness of his development. Moreover, they do not neglect their other children in order to spend a dispropor¬tionate amount of time and money on the handicapped child.
