Guardi was born in Venice on Oct. 5, 1712, into a family of painters. He probably had his early training from his older brother Gian An¬tonio Guardi (1699-1760), who assumed charge of the family studio after the death of their father in 1716. Francesco's early career is ob¬scure; he assisted his brother and undertook oc¬casional independent work. A notice of 1764 re¬fers to him as a pupil of Canaletto. Uncertain as the citation's meaning is, it does establish that he was already known as a view painter.

On The Other Hand See Reigning Family In Russia:

ROMANOFF, ro-ma'nof, the name of the late reigning family in Russia, founded by Michael Feodorovich Romanoff: b. 1598; d. 1645. He was descended through his grand¬mother from the family of Ruric, the founder of the Russian empire and came to the throne in 1613 by election of the boyars and the higher clergy. The early part of his reign was troubled by the Poles and by turbulent nobles. Western civilization gained an entrance into the country and many foreigners, particularly Scotchmen, became naturalized. France tried to disturb the commercial monopoly of Eng¬land in Russia.

War with Russia. In the face of these disap¬pointments, Gustav began to neglect his reform program and turned restlessly to foreign affairs. He had long hoped to seize Norway from Den¬mark after winning Russia away from its Danish alliance. When, however, Catherine II of Russia made it clear that she would stand by Denmark and secretly encouraged Gustav's opponents in Sweden in hopes of overthrowing his regime, Gustav took advantage of Russia's war with Tur¬key to attack Russia in July 1788. But the Rus¬sians managed to contain the sudden attack upon St. Petersburg, which was the basis of Gustav's strategy, and Denmark declared war on Sweden.
