Box turtles spend all or the greater part of their lives on land. They make excellent pets. They are usually found in the mature or half-grown state, when they are too large to house pets in a terrarium for any length of time. However, they make wonderful pets for a home garden.
The young of the above turtles are the ones which most often fall into the hands of children. They are easy to maintain in captivity at home or at school. The adults are not so easy to house pets because of their size and their need for room and freedom. Adults should be kept as pets only in a home with a garden pool available, but the young are the simplest of pets to house pets and maintain.
