Home Language:

Home Language The interaction patterns between parents and bilinguals may be dif¬ferent to those in monolingual families. Cultural background affects attitudes to child rearing practices, home environment and motiva¬tion for language learning. Children from linguistic minorities can be subjected to societal and parental pressure to become bilingual if the home language has limited official status.

When I was a child, we used Gujerati at home. My mother and father used Kachchi, a language related to Gujerati to each other. Sometimes there were visitors in the house, when perhaps Urdu, Hindi or English was spoken. The language of the streets and markets was Swahili. The language of religion was Arabic, and the language of the school was English! At school, I was taught to read and write Gujerati and English and later on, I started learning French . . . This is not unusual - it hap¬pens in many parts of the world.

See Also Hammered Home:

Wrought iron is softer than cast iron and has less carbon and other impurities in it. It is not brittle and may be hammered into bars, rolled into plates, or drawn into wires. It can be hammered or bent to almost any shape and holds the shape to which it is bent. For this reason it is called a malleable material (derived from Latin, malleus, a hammer). Wrought iron may be welded; that is, separate pieces may be joined together by hammering when they are red-hot.

The technique of inlay is used for silver as well as for base metal. A design is engraved, and the ground is cut away; or the design is etched, and the ground removed by acid. The resulting hollow is then filled with the inlay metal, gold or silver, which then is fused or hammered home.

On The Other Hand See Home -use:

For each custom home -use design plan, he sends his team of stone and timber experts into the forests of Northern New England to find giant boulders, entire trees or 8-ton Granite stones that become the signature elements of each custom built home -use. When asked about the use of such unusual materials in his design Nold said, "When a client wants their weekend, or second home -use to provide retreat and renewal far from their primary home -use - this distance is not measured just in miles, but in the emotions their home -use evokes.

This is a good deal easier said than done since, with the best intentions in the world, it is hard to prevent a child who feels left out experiencing pressure. Second, a determined effort must be made to find someone else for the child to read to, in circumstances as like home -use as possible. An older sibling, a family friend or neighbour, or an older pupil from the school might be asked to hear the child read, in the child's home -use or their own. Or another child's parents who are committed to home -use reading might invite the child to their home -use sometimes for a session.
