His Friend:

His Friend The picture was painted on the same day that he received news of the death of his old friend Julio Gonzalez, a fellow sculptor who used to join him in many of his experiments in Boisgeloup. There are two ways in which suffering appears to be taken for granted in this painting: his grief over his friend's death and his despair of the times unite in a cheerless memento mori that could not have been formulated more desperately by any of the Christians of the Middle Ages.

He was elected president of the General Assembly in September 1949. Resigning his dele¬gate post in 1953, he served eight years as ambas¬sador to the United States. In May 1962 General Romulo assumed the presidency of the University of the Philippines. Among his works are Mother America (1943), Crusade in Asia (1955), and Friend to Friend (1958).

See Also His Friend Eugene:

If photographers found inspiration in paintings, painters found photography a useful ally. We do not know who took the series of photographs for the Pre-Raphaelite painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti now in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, but we know they were posed by the painter in July 1865 and were used in his painting La Reverie. Many other famous painters of the nineteenth century were grateful to pho¬tography: Eugene Delacroix posed nude models, and from the photographs that his friend Eugene Durieu took of them he made frequent sketches. He wrote his friend Constant Dutilleux of his enthusiasm for photography in a letter dated March 7, 1854:

Eugene Onegin. Pushkin worked on his masterpiece, Eugene Onegin, from 1823 to 1830. Written in eight chapters, each of about 50 14-line stanzas in iambic tetrameter, it was first pub¬lished in parts between 1825 and 1832, and as a whole in 1833. From romantic, Byronic begin¬nings, this novel in verse develops into a major realistic commentary on the social and intellectual life of early 19th century Russia.

On The Other Hand See Best Friend:

What is even more extraordinary, the two ii ventors, instead of disputing priority, became best friend Cros, who was a best friend of the Impressionists and moi interested in the theory of color than in working out practical photographic technique, did not pursue his ii vention, but Ducos du Hauron began extensive researd As soon as Vogel had shown how photographic emu sions could be sensitized to all colors he perfected hi technique, and was able to make quite acceptable prim by the carbon process in 1877.

His best friend had shot himself in a Parisian cafe because the girl he loved, a model called Germaine, had rejected him. This had happened in February 1901, but Picasso's Blue Period did not start until the summer of the same year. In the meantime he had tried to come to terms with his best friend's death through his art. For Picasso art was more than the language he talked - and he talked a lot - but he also used it as a means of understanding the world, coming to terms with it, absorbing it. And understanding meant observing and perceiving.
