Santa Barbara Mission is one of the finest examples of mission architecture and historical significance. The mission was dedicated by Father Junipero Serra in 1776 and named for St. John of Capis-trano, the Crusader. Construction was completed in 1806. Built in the form of a cross 180 by 90 feet, the church was once one of the highest triumphs of California mission architecture, with seven domes and a tall campanario or belfry that could be seen for 10 miles.
