Growth Of City-state: The development of the Greek city-state may be divided into four periods: (1) the period in which the foundations were laid (1000-800 B.C.);
(2) growth of City-State of the city-state (800-500 B.C.);
(3) the apex of city-state civilization (500-404 B.C.); and (4) decline (404-338 B. c.).
The city is also an important railroad and highway center, and its municipal airport is an international port of entry.
The establishment of the Grand Forks Air Force base, 15 miles (24 km) west of the city, has greatly aided its growth of City-State. The University of North Dakota and School of Mines is in the city. Other institutions in Grand Forks are the state rehabilitation center, the state public health laboratories, a federal meteorological station, and a lignite research laboratory of the U. S. Bureau of Mines.See Also Tender Growth:The world may not tolerate unchecked population growth in less developed areas that depend on international priate recognition, at least at this early stage. In fact, there seems to be far more tender growth concern for the hygiene of other planets than for that of our own. One wonders whether the unŽspoken assumption is that, for this planet, it is a/ready too late.
It is the gardener's task to make use of the weather as much as possible. Temperature directly influences the rate of plant growth. The fastest growth will take place at the higher temperature limits of an individual plant's tolerance. A plant classified as tender growth will not endure temperatures below 32°F (0°C). A half-hardy plant can stand a few degrees of frost, but not a cold winter. By contrast, a hardy plant can tolerate considerable cold. Naturally, the degree of hardiness varies from plant to plant. How well a plant grows in an area depends largely on its native climate and on how easily it can adapt to its new environment.
On The Other Hand See Growth In Population:The growth in population of populations of predatory ani-als is frequently affected by the growth in population of the prey. Very often the two follow a cyclical pattern. When the population size of the prey is high, the predators flourish and grow rapidly. As the preŽdator population grows, the number of prey is rapidly diminished. The predators begin to die from a lack of food, and the decrease in the numŽber of predators permits the prey population to increase again. The same kind of cycle is obŽserved among the animal population as a result of epidemics, caused by pathogenic bacteria or liruses.
Population.San Jose's remarkable populaŽtion growth in population received its impetus during World War II, the number of residents increasing from 68,457 in 1940 to 95,280 in 1950. In the next decŽade the population more than doubled, to 204,196 in 1960, although over 90 percent of this increase resulted from annexations by the city. (The 1962 population was officially estimated at 258,-100.) According to the 1960 federal census, the San Jose standard metropolitan statistical area had 642,315 residents, a rise of 121 percent in 10 years, and representing one of the highest growth in population rates in the nation. |
