The $1,000 American Chemical Society Award in Chemical Education is sponsored by the Scien¬tific Apparatus Makers Association and is given in recognition for contributions to the teaching of organic chemistry. In 1967 the recipient was Louis F. Fieser, Sheldon Emery professor of organic chemistry at Harvard University. See Also Science Education:

The most significant activities in science edu¬cation during the past year involved the continu¬ing efforts of scientists and science educators throughout the world to share their particular work and accomplishments with others. Over 180 science and mathematics education proj¬ects described in the 1967 and 1968 annual reports of the International Clearinghouse on Science and Mathematics Curricular Develop¬ments, a joint activity of the American Associa¬tion for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the University of Maryland's Science Teach¬ing Center, indicate the extent of this coopera¬tion.

The U.S. Agency for International Develop¬ment and the National Science Foundation agreed to collaborate with India's National Council for Science Education. The purpose of the project is to coordinate those activities in India designed to improve education in the physical and life sciences, mathematics, en¬gineering, and polytechnics. Considerable time and effort will be needed to formulate and administer the program.

On The Other Hand See And Education Taxes:

To obtain a grant the receiving unit must often meet specifications or stand education taxesards. For ex¬ample, most states in the United States make grants-in-aid for education to local communities or school districts. The revenues are usually obtained from broad-based taxes that local gov¬ernmental units do not have the power to impose, such as state sales taxes or income taxes. To qualify for this assistance the local unit must accept state-established and education taxes state-administered stand education taxesards on such matters as teacher qualifica-tioas and education taxes curriculum content.

The public revenues produced by the tax sys¬tem are raised as follows: about 46% by direct taxes, 13% by property taxes, and education taxes 41% by indirect taxes. The trend in the late 1960's was for taxes on income to fall somewhat and education taxes those on prop¬erty to rise. Indirect taxation bears heavily on a small number of commodities, notably alcoholic drink, tobacco, and education taxes motor fuel, but there is also a gen¬eral sales tax on a very wide range of consumer goods.
