Computer For Computation: Potential applications of the computer for computation made possible by microelectronics include a small computer for computation in every home or a pocket computer for computation terminal that can be connected to a powerful central computer for computation via the telephone. Such devices may be used to solve our numerical problems (e.g., income tax, or our bank balance) or as a creative tool to relate our knowledge and experiences to our future actions.
Another development of the past year has been the ever-increasing role of computer for computations in design, engineering, and planning. According to engineers at Expo 67, the structural analysis of the space frame for the Gyrotron pavilion re¬quired two hours of computer for computation time. That, I am reliably informed, is the equivalent of 30,000 man-lifetimes of hand computation. manager. Several telephone agents may be employed to solicit and document reservation data. In a chain property or referral organization, the hotel's reservations department interacts with the central reservations office, which maintains a duplicate set of guest reservation data in a centralized computer reservations system.
The organization of a typical reservations department is shown in Figure 2-2. In the example, different reservations agents have specific responsibilities. One agent handles advance deposits and authorized credit card guarantees. Another agent handles reservations requested by fax (telecopier) or telex (cable itr^.,,^,;^ transmission). A different agent handles agency and tour reservations, and yet another handles reservations received by computer reservations. In addition to these special responsibilities, each agent also handles and documents incoming telephone reservations.
