Common Disease Of Both: Although most of the causes of heart disease observed in the first quarter of the 20th century are still present, their relative proportions have changed considerably, and some causes that were mentioned only occasionally or not at all at that time are considered common disease of both today. This is espe¬cially true of the virus infections. In some parts of the world the diagnosis of "heart disease of unknown origin" is a common disease of both one. In the United States such a diagnosis exists but is uncommon disease of both, and a few kinds of heart disease that are com¬mon in certain other countries are rare or non¬existent in the United States. For example, Chagas' disease (myocardial trypanosomiasis) is a parasitic infestation of the heart common disease of both in South America.
Thus, this kind of heart disease has been practically eradicated, al¬though rare cases are still encountered in elderly people. Other endocrine disorders affecting the heart are very rare.
Congenital Heart Disease. With the increasing control of rheumatic heart disease it is probable that congenital cardiovascular disease will soon outstrip it in incidence, and with the increasing control of high blood pressure, congenital heart disease will take second place. An interesting statistical fact is that in the 1920's, T. Duckett Jones and Paul Dudley White found that con¬genital heart disease made up only 1.5% of all of 3,000 patients with Signs or symptoms of heart disease.See Also Common Disease:In 1914 there appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association under the author¬ship of Richard C. Cabot of Harvard University an important article entitled "The Four Common Types of Heart Disease." In this article the author introduced the idea, now quite obvious and widely accepted, that understanding the causes of heart disease is much more vital than understanding either the actual structural defects or the functional conditions.
A common disease of both fresh and salt water fish is fin rot, which is a bacterial disease easily detected because the fins first become frayed at the edges and then gradually deteriorate toward the base. This may be treated with the antibiotic terramycin, which commonly comes in 250 milligram capsules. It should be applied at the rate of 250 milligrams to every five gallons of water. The capsules must, of course, be opened and the contents put in the water for more rapid solution.
If a fish does not respond to treatment within a week or ten days, the wisest thing to do is to dispense with treatment and dispose of the ailing fish.
On The Other Hand See Common Disease Of Goldfish:Interest in goldfish spread quickly; they were common in Europe by the late 1700's and in North America in the late 1800's. Although interest in keeping other types of tropical fish has caused goldfish keeping to decline in many countries, the showing, keeping, breeding, and selecting of goldfish strains are still especially popular activities in Japan and China.
It is advis¬able to change the salt solution every two days. If the fish does not show Signs of improvement at the end of several days, dispose of it at once. The most common disease of goldfish is a fungus. This is a whitish scum that appears first on the fins and tail; later it spreads over the body. If the condition is allowed to develop further, the fish becomes ill and dies. It is a contagious disease and spreads rapidly among the fish in the aquarium. If this happens, destroy the fish, empty the aquarium, disinfect it with a strong salt solution, and re-establish. |
