Collegiate Education:

Collegiate Education ROCKNE, Knute Kenneth, American foot¬ball coach: b. Voss, Norway, March 4, 1888; d. near Bazaar, Kans., March 31, 1931. Brought to the United States by his parents at the age of five, he grew up in Chicago. After graduating from high school he worked as brakeman and mail clerk to obtain funds for a collegiate education.

SAINT THOMAS, College of, a Roman Catholic liberal arts college for men, in St. Paul, Minn., founded in 1885 by Archbishop John Ireland. The campus contains some 45 acres, with instructional buildings in collegiate Gothic. Bache¬lor's degrees are conferred in arts and science, and master's degrees in arts and education. Sum¬mer and graduate courses are open to women. The school colors are purple and gray.

Primary Schools. In England the act of 1870 laid the groundwork for a system of universal education, but it provided for instruction only of children less than 13 years of age. Attendance did not become compulsory education until 1880, and though free education was given in most ele¬mentary schools after 1891, fee paying was not completely abolished until 1918. The act that forbade fees also made education to the age of 14 compulsory education.

Forster's Education Act 1870, which heralded compulsory education state edu¬cation, made provision for school boards to ensure attendance but they were not compelled to do so, though later Acts strengthened this aspect. More recent Education Acts, however, have reinstated the right of parents to opt to educate their children 'at home', though this has often been made difficult and met with social and administrative dis¬approbation. This was enshrined in the Education Act 1944 where the term 'education otherwise' was coined, and again in Section 7 of the Education Act 1996 which states:

About 70 colleges and universities offer programs to train health education of teachers, and the profession is growing. Members of the pro¬fession feel strongly that health education of should not be considered a part of physical education of and that physical education of should not be a branch of health education of. Some high schools now give a half year to physical education of and a half year to health instruction.

World War II brought a renewed focus on the role of the school in promoting good health. The traditional equating of health with physical fitness, and health education of with physical edu¬cation, was further perpetuated during this pe¬riod. During the 1960's this concept was replaced by the identification of health education of as a discipline separate from physical education of. The School Health education of Study, initiated with private funds in 1961, had the most significant impact in establishing health education of as a separate discipline.
