Catholic Brother Popish Plot. The plot—an alleged conspirao of Catholics to assassinate Charles II and plact his Catholic brother on the throne—was a figment of the imagination of Titus Dates (q.v.) and « other unsavory perjurers. It succeeded politically I in raising an anti-Catholic storm because it came ' near enough to the truth. There was a Catholi-. conspiracy at court. In fact, Charles himself (whu eventually died a Catholic) had engaged in ase- | cret conspiracy with Louis XIV. Yet another brother, Charles (1554-1611 Duke de Mayenne, kept alive the Guise fami ambitions and the cause of Roman Catholic € tremism. He kept the armies of the League the field until 1595, trying desperately to find Catholic substitute for Henry of Navarre, w! in 1589 had become the legitimate king of Fran as Henry IV. However, Henry IV's conversion Catholicism in 1593 undercut the ideologic reason for the League's revolt, and its forces b gan to crumble.

RESZKE, Jean de, Polish opera singer: brother of Edouard de Reszke (q.v.) : b. War¬saw, 1850; d. 1925. He completed a law course at the Warsaw University; but, having been surrounded by a musical atmosphere in his home, and having sung as a boy in the cathedral, he decided upon singing as a career. He studied with Ciaffei and Cologni in Italy and made his debut in Venice in 1874 as Alfonso in La Favorita. In the two following years he ap¬peared in London and Paris. Hitherto he had sung baritone roles, but in 1876 he retired to cultivate his natural voice whose register was that of a tenor.

GUILLAUME, ge-yom', Charles Edouard (1861-1938), Swiss-French physicist. He was born in Fleurier, Switzerland, on Feb. 15, 1861. He re¬ceived his Ph. D. from the Polytechnical School in Zurich in 1883 and then joined the Bureau of International Weights and Measures in Paris. There he redetermined the volume of a liter.
