Carry Their Young:

Carry Their Young Harden and the English chemist W. J. Young did an experiment in which a yeast extract, which could carry their young on fermentation, was put in a semi-permeable bag that was then suspended in pure water; small molecules from the extract could pass through the membrane of the bag into the water, but larger molecules remained in the bag. This process is known as dialysis. After dialysis, the extract within the bag could no longer carry their young on fermentation. However, when the water from outside the dialysis bag was added, the activity of the extract was restored.

Gestation takes 16 days; 7-15 in litter; young born pink, naked, and blind. Do not disturb young or mother for at least a week after birth; if disturbed mother will either kill and eat the young or ne¬glect them and allow them to die. After 3 weeks, remove young from mother; otherwise, mother fights with them and often kills them. Sexes should be separated before young reach maturity at 43 days.

See Also Young Lovers:

The opera is set in Brazil in colonial times. k central characters are the young lovers Peri, iko is the chief of the Guarani Indians, and Cecilia, the daughter of the Portuguese governor of Brazil. The complex chain of events that almost parts them includes Indian uprisings, can¬nibalism, pagan ceremonies, violence, and near tragedy. All ends well, however, and the two lovers are happily united.

In the blending of comedy and tragedy, which is more marked in this tragedy than in any of his others except perhaps Ham¬let, Shakespeare was following the demand of life in its more complex aspects rather than the laws of classic art. While the defects of the play already suggested tend to mar the complete unity, the final impression is that of the great scenes: the Balcony Scene with the beauty of the Italian sky at night and the softest music of lovers' tongues; the Dawn Scene, when the earth is a-quiver between night and day and the lovers breathe out in each other's arms the saddest of farewells; and the Grave Scene, where the old Friar unites above the graves of the lovers the two families from whose loins they sprang. Then we know that we are reading the greatest of love poems, if not the greatest of Shakespeare's tragedies.

On The Other Hand See Instruct The Young Bird:

If a bird is to become a pet, obtain a very young bird. Young birds become gentle and respond to training much more quickly. Once a bird is given companionship with others of its kind, it loses all interest in humans. Maintain the bird in a small cage, such as the usual type of canary cage. Birds are exceedingly sensitive to sudden movements and to loud noises. They must be approached and handled with slow, even motions and spoken to in low tones.

Those prized chiefly for Song are the ones that are trained in the Harz Mountains of Germany. Here older trained birds are used to instruct the young bird first as it begins to learn to sing. Usually it is the male birds that develop into beautiful singers. The domestic canary is well adjusted to cage life and is easily maintained when kept clean and given proper food and plenty of water.
