Beloved Friend:

Beloved Friend Among the rest of Haydn's chamber music, the more than 40 trios for piano, violin, and cello deserve mention. The G-Major Trio, with its fiery rondo-finale "all'Ongarese," is a general favorite. Haydn also wrote more than 50 sonatas for the piano, of which the last four, composed in the 1790's, are the most important. Also nota¬ble are his poignant piano variations in F Minor, written on the death of a beloved friend.

The picture was painted on the same day that he received news of the death of his old friend Julio Gonzalez, a fellow sculptor who used to join him in many of his experiments in Boisgeloup. There are two ways in which suffering appears to be taken for granted in this painting: his grief over his friend's death and his despair of the times unite in a cheerless memento mori that could not have been formulated more desperately by any of the Christians of the Middle Ages.

See Also Old Friend Jaime:

Picasso's " Bathers with a Toy Boat" (p. 61) of February 1937 is one of his key paintings during this profound time of crises." I am writing to you immediately to let you know that as from tonight I shall give up painting, sculpting, etching and poetry, and shall devote myself to singing instead." These were the words Picasso wrote to his old friend Jaime Sabartes, whom he knew from his days in Barcelona. Well, he did not sound the retreat. It was no more than an understandable but momentary phase of depression.

(This has a luxury rating, but in prices a pension is always one bracket lower than a hotel of similar rating.) Granada—Victoria (1-B); Parador San Francisco (as always, a parador is 1-B in prices but the place is superior in charm). Malaga—Belaire (1-A); Limonar (1-B). Palma—Principe Alfonso (1-A); Victoria (1-A). Both of these are directly on the sea. Places of 1-B rating include the big new Jaime I in the town.

On The Other Hand See Personal Friend:

All this changed when an assassin's bullet ended McKinley's life on Sept. 14, 1901. The new president, Theodore Roosevelt, was an old friend of Hay's and asked him to continue as sec¬retary of state. Hay remained in the State De¬partment, serving under Roosevelt almost four years. Roosevelt was 43, and Hay was now 63. Despite the gulf in age the two men had ami¬able personal relations, but the exuberant Roose¬velt never allowed Hay the freedom to conduct foreign policy as he had with McKinley.

In the presidential race of 1800 be campaigned for Thomas Jefferson, a personal friend, and he served as U. S. postmaster general under Jefferson and James Madison from 1801 :o 1814. Thereafter he lived in Canandaigua, SJ. Y., where he lent enthusiastic support to De Witt Clinton and the Erie Canal project. To :urther the canal, he also served in the New fork Senate (1820-1821). He died at Canan-iaigua on Dec. 31, 1822.
